SWEU News from San Diego Comic Con

Del Rey and Dark Horse held their Future of Star Wars Publishing panel this afternoon (or evening, depending on your time zone). Thanks to Bryan Young from Big Shiny Robot and Star Wars Action News for their live tweeting of the event.

The news is as follows:

  • Darth Maul Death Sentence will be a four issue miniseries bridging Seasons 4-5 of The Clone Wars.
  • Next month we’ll have a comic series that will tie into Lost Tribe of the Sith: Spiral. The visuals will be “very strampunk.”
  • Dawn of the Jedi will continue in November with Prisoner of Bogan.
  • The movies are all you’ll need to know in order to understand the new Star Wars comic.
  • Del Rey showed some artwork from the Essential Reader’s Companion. There will be 100 scene paintings and 50 character portraits.
  • Regarding Scoundrels, it’s not Han’s idea to involve Lando and he’s not happy about it.
  • Coming in 2013: The Last Jedi by Michael Reaves and Maya Kathryn Bohnhoff will continue Coruscant Nights and star Jax Pavan.
  • New SWEU author Tim Lebbon will write Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void, tying into the comic series.
  • Troy Denning is penning a standalone novel set one year after Fate of the Jedi: Apocalypse. Titled Crucible, it will star the Big Three.

  1. Somewhere beyond furious with the Denning announcement. Seriously, people, if you buy it, they will give it more books…which is why Apocalpyse, the best selling novel of the FotJ series, gets a follow up…despite follow up in the same style being exactly what I want least from the EU…

    Though since pretty much the only thing that would make me happy at this point would be: 1) Aaron Allston getting an X-Wing trilogy contract; 2) Mike Stackpole getting another first-person novel contract; 3) Tim Zahn getting another trilogy contract; 4) someone new coming in and doing a Trooper (of some sort) novel (not Republic Commando, though I loved most of those), I am definitely not their biggest market.

    But I did preorder Mercy Kill like, last year. So I feel like I should get at least some say.

    • I can’t believe I’m actually defending a Denning announcement (ugh), but I’m cautiously optimistic for this book. For one, it’s a standalone, and second, I think the Big Three desperately need to go on an adventure together. If there’s some good character moments amongst all the action, this could be exactly what I’ve wanted from a FOTJ follow-up.

      Hopefully I’ll be motivated to write a blog post about it sometime this weekend.

      • Am still trying to calm down from my initial reaction. I will say that it’s not the worst plan ever, but it’s everything I was hoping would not happen, so it’s going to be a while before I will stop being angry.
