This week on Tosche Station Radio, we’re joined by Saf to break down the middle grade and young adult novels in the Journey to The Force Awakens!

Kicking off the show, the hosts highlight what’s New on the Blog. Bria reviewed Star Wars #10, Lando #5, Darth Vader #10. Bria also attended Baltimore Comic Con a few weekends ago and had the chance to interview Mark Waid and Charles Soule. We did a Go/No-Go for Rise of the Empire, Nanci, a Luke fan, reviewed Smuggler’s Run by Greg Rucka (the Han book). New mom Emily wrote about Walmart’s new Star Wars commercials challenging antiquated gender norms.  Bria regaled us of the happenings in Star Wars Uprising. Nanci reviewed Servants of the Empire: The Secret Academy.

From there it’s the geeky things we’ve been up to in Fixer’s Flash followed by a whole bunch of Rebels news in Deak’s Dirt. There’s the usual TFA mass speculation in Biggs’ Bull$&!@

This week on Camie’s Concerns, we take a look at the middle grade and YA books that were a part of the Journey to The Force Awakens. What did we enjoy? Are they worth your time? What links to the upcoming film are in these books? Tune in to find out!

You can find Saf here on Twitter and be sure to check out a new podcast she’s a part of, Rogue Podron: the book club revisiting the wonderful X-Wing novels.

Dunc from Club Jade joins us this week to review Aftermath and where it stacks u to what we had seen in Legends!

Kicking off the show, the hosts highlight What’s New on the Blog. We had our Dragon Con 2015 coverage! There were Aftermath reviews from Bria, Emily, and a Go/No-go. Nanci reviewed Lost Stars and Bria wrote about Nash Windrider and the True Power of the Empire. Nanci reviewed The Weapon of a Jedi and Bria reviewed Moving Target. We have a new staff writer, Matthew Bowers! He reviewed the Rebels Season 1 blu ray set and the Rey’s Speeder LEGO set. Finally, Bria reviewed Darth Vader #9, Star Wars #9, Lando #4.

From there we head to Fixer’s Flash, where the hosts have been busy with Dragon Con and reading. Deak’s Dirt is light this week, but Biggs’ Bull#&$! brings word of Rogue One and Episode VIII filming!

On Camie’s Concerns this week, we take a look at Aftermath. What do we think of it, and where does it stack up to what we saw in Legends? Could it be that our memories of Legends might be a little rose-colored? Tune in and find out.

The Persecution Complex of Bring Back Legends Rears its Ugly Head at Dragon Con

I’ll be honest, I was more than happy to just write off Bring Back Legends as a mostly annoying but ultimately ineffectual movement. That all changed this past weekend when Bring Back Legends/Continue Legends or whatever they’re calling themselves took it upon themselves to turn Dragon Con 2015 into a platform for their fanboy entitlement. Not unlike how Gamer Gate thinks they own gaming, or Sad Puppies thinks they own science fiction, BBL is acting like they own Star Wars fandom and will do whatever it takes to make their voices heard.

Things began to look curious midnight on Force Friday, when in short order the Amazon page for Aftermath began to be flooded with one-star reviews of the book. There were three primary complaints: the inclusion of LGBT characters, the prose style, and griping about Legends. As for the prose style complaints, it’s odd that so many people had seemingly read the book in less than an hour, especially considering that Del Rey sent out perhaps less than 20 advance review copies. Certainly, some stores broke street dates, but not enough to account for the massive influx of reviews that seemed to complain about the exact same thing (as Chuck Wendig, Michael Patrick Hicks, and Jim C. Hines noted). At absolute best, it’s a bizarre coincidence. At worst, it’s an organized campaign designed to, as Wendig so brilliant put it, weaponize nostalgia for Legends and hurt folks as a result.

Okay, quite a bit more than annoying, but the negative reviews actually help the Amazon algorithms prioritize Aftermath, so I guess it’s more amusing in a dark way than anything else. Once again I’m ready to shrug off Bring Back Legends and the one-star Amazon review campaign.

Then the rest of Dragon Con happened.
