If you don’t read Scott Kurtz’s PVP, well, you should. If you’re like me and you don’t necessarily read it regularly so you can catch up all at once as a treat to yourself–today’s comic might be an exception as Cole and Brent catch up and discuss the important things in life–The Walking Dead and Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm.

Random Penguin
Official news came down the pipeline today that the rumors are true: Random House and Penguin are merging in a massive business deal that will create the largest publishing company in the world. Why is this Star Wars news? Well, as Dunc over at Club Jade pointed out, both Random House and Penguin both have imprints in DelRey and DK that print Star Wars material.
But don’t get too excited yet. This deal is still subject to regulatory approval, and that may be a problem. Dunc and I have both posited that this could be a case for anti-trust investigations. Why? Right now, in the UK, Random House and Penguin make up 27% of book sales. Forbes speculates that in the US, that number jumps to about 40% of trade book sales. Globally, according to the Huffington Post, the two would make up 26% of world wide book sales. I would note that none of these numbers specifically address the academic publishing arms of these companies either; Pearson (owner of Penguin) has a massive education publishing arm, and combining with Random House could end up with a larger share of the textbook market as well, and any college student taking a look at textbooks in their college bookstore knows what kind of problem that might be.
It is important that in all of these articles, the words “subject to regulatory approval” or “anti-trust approval” come up. The fact that both Random House and Penguin are European-based companies could complicate matters. And for those of us who are aspiring authors, this new conglomeration could be good or bad (see the Forbes article linked above.) In any case, this smacks of desperation on the sides of the publishers in the face of ebooks (especially after the Department of Justice came down on the agency pricing model). But don’t look away yet. The Huffington Post also reports that NewsCorp is looking to add to HarperCollins, so more big publisher mergers may be on the horizon.
DVR Watch: Tuesday, October 30th
Star Wars fans, take notice. Billy Dee Williams (ESB and RotJ’s Lando Calrissian) will be guest-starring on CBS’s #1 drama NCIS tomorrow as Leroy Jethro Moore, the man for whom Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) was named for in the fifth episode of NCIS‘s tenth season, “The Namesake.”
The episode synopsis reads: “A petty officer found dead in the car of a millionaire has ties to a friend of Jackson Gibbs prompting an investigation.” You can watch the preview of the episode here at CBS.com.
NCIS airs on Tuesdays at 8:00 pm eastern, 7:00 pm, central. For those of you on the east coast who may miss the episode due to Hurricane Sandy related weather reports or electric/cable outages, the episode will be available on CBS.com starting Wednesday.
A Geek’s Guide to New Mexico
As some of you may know, Shane (my other half and sometimes blogger for Tosche Station) has been working out in New Mexico for the last few months, and since fall break was this week, I traveled out to see him, and we took the opportunity to investigate some of the geeky offerings that New Mexico has to offer, and I have been dispatched to share them with you.
We stayed mostly in the Albuquerque area, but the first thing we did was visit the Very Large Array, the world’s largest radio telescope. It’s recently been upgraded into the Expanded Very Large Array (they’re really sticking with the imaginative names here), in order to revamp and bring the technology up to state of the art. Made up of 27 giant antennas that can be moved around three 21 mile long tracks, the VLA also serves as the control center and part of the Very Large Baseline Array, an array of telescopes that connects radio telescopes from Hawaii to the Caribbean to create one giant, continental radio telescope. You can tour the VLA most days if you’re in the area, but if you don’t find yourself in New Mexico, you can take a virtual tour via the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s website. If you do go in person, know that once you get outside of Socorro, you should go ahead and turn off your cell phone; you’ll drain your battery as it searches for a signal, and when you get to the VLA, you have to turn off your cell phone and any other devices that might transmit radio signals, as they can interfere with observations (though turning your cell phone to airplane mode will allow you to be able to take pictures at the site).

X-wing: Mercy Kill Review (Spoilers!)
Today, I was cursing myself for not knowing that the bookstore had new hours and was open an hour earlier than I thought originally, because I wanted Mercy Kill as soon as I could get it in my grubby little hands. If, for some reason, you have not gotten your copy yet…go get it. Right now. This is the best Star Wars book to come out in years.
And now, I’ve read it. This review is not so much a review as it is me squealing about various parts of the book. There are spoilers behind the jump, so fair warning.
X-wing Retrospective: Starfighters of Adumar
People have asked me what my favorite Star Wars book is before. They’ve asked me what the best Star Wars book is. Those ideas always change for me, depending on what I’ve read most recently and what the newest Tim Zahn book is.
But if anyone ever thought to ask me which Star Wars book was the most fun, the answer would have to be Starfighters of Adumar, hands down. Click on the jump for more from our final X-wing retrospective as we gear up for Mercy Kill.
Darth Vader and…bunnies?
I was watching my local news last night, when Channel 4 highlighted artist Kelly Kerrigan, whose pop culture art puts a twist on your typical Star Wars and geek art by combining some of the meanest villains of the Empire and some of the cuddliest critters to be found on Earth, as well as other, more varied ways of depicting our favorite characters. You can take a look at the story from Channel 4 in the upper right-hand corner of Channel 4’s page, and you can check out all of Kerrigan’s artwork (and even order ones you like!) at her website, kellykerrigan.blogspot.com. (Personally, I really want the Iron Man and bunny portrait for my best friend.)
If you happen to be in the Metro Nashville area, stop by The Arcade, where Kerrigan’s paintings will be displayed in the upcoming weeks.
Joss wins again
If you have somehow been living under an Internet rock and haven’t yet seen the wonder that is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog (featuring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day), and for some reason have a Joss Whedon firewall on your computer–fear not! Dr. Horrible will air for the first time on television Tuesday, October 9th on the CW.
The good news is that Dr. Horrible is only one episode, so the network can’t come in and prematurely cancel it.
Shane will be back after these brief messages….
Given the prospect of full-time employment (for which we are very thankful), Shane will not be about for the next few months as he treks across parts of the Western United States. When he returns from working 50-60 hour weeks, he’ll be back to his normal antics. And who knows, he might pop in from time to time anyway.
Mark Hamill Wades into Presidential Politics
In a rare foray into non-fandom issues, Mark Hamill sounded off on his thoughts on the presidential election at Comic-Con this week. The gist of the story? Luke Skywalker is apparently a Barack Obama fan and had a few things to say about Mitt Romney, keeping in the Comic-Con theme of things in his answer: “And you look at Romney—and I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but I think he’s like The Thing: He only imitates human behavior. He’s not actually human himself.”
See the full video of Hamill’s comments at the link above, via Yahoo!
(To forestall any possible political flames: Tosche Station has no preference one way or another. This is Star Wars news, thus, we are reporting it. Please keep comments related to the Star Wars aspect of this story, not the merits of one candidate over another.)
