The Coruscant Craft Fair Rides Again!

Sometimes, a girl just needs geeky shoes. Enter Etsy seller MadeInBoston and her made to order comic book heels. Hey–Star Wars has comic books that could be used for these purposes–there is even Star Wars comic book fabric now available at JoAnn’s Fabric Stores (I saw aprons made from this fabric for sale at FandomFest).

But Etsy has more treasures, ladies and gentlemen. Custom-made R2D2 beanies in four different options? Not to mention the perfect onesie for your geeky baby girl, trailing her ATAT along as her pet. (Check out the rest of EngramClothing’s shop for more awesome Star Wars wearables).

Science to show Firefly Reunion

Can’t make it to the Firefly Reunion panel at SDCC? That’s okay–the Science channel will be airing a special so we can all enjoy on Sunday, November 11th. It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since we first went into the black, but Browncoats Unite will be the capstone to the Science Channel’s 10-year anniversary celebration of this Joss Whedon classic.

WoW on Sale

From now until Monday, you can get the entirety of WoW (including expansions) for only $30. That’s right, the original WoW, Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm for only $30. Is this yet another ploy on Blizzard’s part to gain back traction, especially as we prepare for the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion? Absolutely. Possibly a reaction to TOR? Doubtful, given their hemorrhaging of members. But if you’ve ever wanted to play WoW or see what the fuss was about, now’s your chance–the Battle Chest (WoW and Burning Crusade) include the first month of play free.

So, this happened.

FandomFest Louisville was a blast. My besties and I arrived for events Saturday and had a great time. Tickets were really reasonable–$25 for the day, though if you wanted autographs from some of the guests, they were $30 apiece. Among the geekdom celebrities available for (paid) autographs there were John Rhys-Davies, Sean Astin, James Marsters, Nick Brendon, Peter Davison, Gareth David-Lloyd, and Luke Perry. (These were all the ones I saw.) Other celebrities included cast members from the Walking Dead and Boondock Saints, Colin Ferguson from Eureka, and of course, the headliner, Bruce Campbell. He was only going to be available for two hours Saturday evening, due to conflicts with his shooting schedule for Burn Notice, and tickets went amazingly fast.

The Higgs Boson All But Confirmed

In a coup for modern physics, scientists at CERN believe they have found proof of the Higgs Boson. While rumors have been abounding about this possible discovery of late, the Daily Mail just brought out a report last night that CERN is very close to having definitive proof (definitive being the difference between 99.99% sure and 99.99995% sure–semantics for most of us).

The Higgs Boson is probably the best definition for the Force–it very literally is what binds the universe together.

Cosplay Monday: I ain’t afraid of no ghosts!

Louisville GhostbustersEvery week, we feature some awesome cosplayers on the blog, and when you run into these guys at FandomFest, then there’s really no question about who our next featured costumers are going to be! Complete with some of the most realistic proton packs I’ve ever seen on a Ghostbusters cosplayer, ghost traps and even a plushie Slimer, these guys were great.

Meet the Louisville Ghostbusters! This group of really fun guys had a booth set up at FandomFest, handing out business cards that said “We are ready to believe you!” While the guys no longer have their own website, you can check out this YouTube video of them checking out Waverly Hills Sanitorium. Check out their Facebook page for much better pictures than the one I took with my phone, including this one of the guys posing with Ecto 1 (Click the picture for a better view).

Take a look, it’s in a book

I grew up reading, and one of my favorite television shows was, naturally, about reading–I watched Reading Rainbow for at least fifteen of its twenty-six year run, and remember certain books with a definite fondness–The Day Jimmy’s Boa Constrictor Ate the Wash, and one I became reacquainted with this weekend: When I was Young in the Mountains.

So for all of us who grew up reading (and who then recognized LeVar Burton when we saw him on Star Trek), fear not. Our children will not be deprived of Reading Rainbow, as Burton has been working since the end of Reading Rainbow in 2006 to create an app. At midnight, June 20th, the Reading Rainbow app will be available for the iPad.

Why am I posting this here? Well, because to my mind, reading has been pretty integral to being a geek.

And then there’s the part where a Reading Rainbow app is just cool.

Transporters, yea or nay?

Someday...

Any geek who has ever been on a multi-hour road trip has at some point banged their head against the headrest and asked “Why hasn’t someone invented teleporters yet?”

I stumbled across a nice little article on Yahoo, linked from LiveScience that, while dashing our hopes for teleportation any time soon, has some pretty cool information on the quantum information teleportation that scientists can currently do, and theorizes that Star Trek-type transporting may be a matter of wormholes in the future. (The explanation of why we can’t use teleporters could be a plausible retcon explanation of why Star Wars is missing this piece of technology?)

SW:TOR goes partially free to play

EA just announced at E3 that SW:TOR would be free to play from levels 1-15.

Will this help BioWare pick up all the subscribers it’s lost? World of Warcraft went free to play from levels 1-20 last year, but I don’t think it’s helped Blizzard make up the subscriber loss it suffered after everyone finished the Cataclysm end-game content. Seems to me that SW:TOR needs to spend more time developing new modules and content instead.
