Review: The Afterward

The big Quest always gets all of the attention in storytelling but there are tales still left to be told about what happens after everyone returns home. The Afterward by E.K. Johnston gleefully delves into this mostly untapped time frame, just as the title indicates, delivering humor, friendship, adventure, and (most importantly) a love story and the world would be a better place if we had more books like this in it.

It’s been a year since Apprentice Knight Kalanthe Ironheart and thief Olsa Rhetsdaughter and the rest of their companions returned from their Quest to find the Godsgem to save the king. While the others are all full knights with a bit more freedom to adapt to being heroes of the kingdom in their own ways, it’s a bit harder for these two to go back to how life once was. Thieving isn’t as simple for Olsa anymore now that everyone knows her and the king’s reward only made a small dent in Kalanthe’s training debt. Will they remain separated by their own pride and honor or will they find their way back to each other again? Continue reading

Holonet Blast #92

Good morning and we hope you all enjoyed the Puppy Bowl yesterday! Actually, that makes me wonder… what’s the Star Wars equivalent of the Puppy Bowl? The Lothcat Bowl? Regardless… I’d watch it.

Speaking of sporting events, LEGO Star Wars is celebrating their 20th anniversary with five new vehicle sets including Anakin Skywalker’s podracer! That set also includes a minifig of Padmé in her peasant disguise and yes I need it.

Celebration guest announcements continue with yet another batch of actors including Ashley Eckstein (who I thought had already been announced before this, whoops), John Ratzenberger (Brian is thrilled!), and Katy Karwheel (who did the physical performance for Rio). You can read the entire list here.

In awesome news, our favorite rogue archaeologist’s comic book was nominated for an Outstanding Comic Book GLAAD award. Congratulations to everyone involved with Doctor Aphra.

Finally, Lucasfilm announced, to much hype, their Galaxy’s Edge books and comics that will allow everyone to step into Batuu. In addition to the previously announced comic series coming in April, fans can look forward to a novel from Del Rey and by Delilah S. Dawson titled Black Spire that appears to star Vi Moradi, a YA novel by Zoraida Córdova titled A Crash of Fate, and Star Wars: Myths and Fables by George Mann which is exactly what it sounds like. You can check out the entire line at the link above but needless to say, we are hyped! Being able to walk into this park with this extra knowledge is going to be (as a certain boy on Tatooine would say) so wizard!

And that’s it for this week!

Resistance Review: The Doza Dilemma

Three episodes into the second half of the season and Star Wars Resistance is reminding us that it is not messing around. The mid-season trailer showed us that dark times are ahead and this episode certainly helped drive the point home.

In “The Doza Dilemma”, Synara finds herself caught between a rock and a hard place as her pirate boss Kragin orders her to assist two of his pirates with getting into the tower so they can kidnap Torra and use her as collateral against her father. It’d be less of an issue for her if it didn’t also mean Synara had to betray her new friendship with Torra. Kaz and the Aces give chase only for the First Order to intervene in a most unexpected manner. Continue reading

Review: Smoke & Summons

What happens when you throw together a human vessel for a dangerous fire spirit and a thief with a talisman that allows him to be immortal for a minute a day? They attract trouble. A lot of trouble.

In the forthcoming Smoke & Summons by Charlie N. Holmberg, Sandis is a slave who has somewhat convinced herself that her current situation isn’t all that bad if you ignore all the times when her master Kazen uses her body to unleash a fire horse spirit named Ireth that shouldn’t even exist on the mortal plane. Or at least she’s able to until she witnesses him murder her friend by trying to summon an even stronger spirit and failing. She escapes and runs headlong into Rone, a thief who’s doing his best to survive and take care of his mother. With Kazen hell bent on hunting down Sandis and Rone in a boat-load of trouble of his own, their flight through the city takes them on a journey neither could have ever imagined. Continue reading

Holonet Blast #89

Hello and welcome back to yet another episode of Holonet Blast. Edition. We mean edition, not episode. (Listen, it’s Monday morning.) It was a quieter week than last but it’s quality over quantity, right?

First up, Star Wars Resistance is back! If you haven’t watched it yet, go watch last night “Bibo” and then read our review. The mid-season trailer made us feel a lot of things and this is fine, everything’s fine, NO ONE IS GOING TO DIE! Resistance has been renewed for Season 2 which generally delights us around here. Seriously, why are some of you sleeping on this show?!

Star Wars Celebration guest announcements are rolling in again and this time, it’s voice actors! Expect to see Resistance’s Christopher Sean, Suzie McGrath, Scott Lawrence; James Arnold Taylor, Matthew Wood, and (the person who made my text and Twitter notifications break) Janina Gavankar! All six will be at the convention signing autographs and meeting fans.

Finally, in sadder news, it seems that Kieron Gillen will be leaving the main Star Wars comic after issue #67/the “Scourging of Sho-Torun” arc. Per his newsletter, “No present plans to write anything else in Star Wars – I suspect I’ve said all I’ve wanted to about these characters in comics. At least in this period, anyway.” (H/T to Comics with Kenobi for catching this.)

And that’s all for this week!

Holonet Blast #87

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Holonet Blast where we’re anxious awaiting to see what other news might drop this week while Brian and Nanci are ONCE AGAIN ON A BOAT. I’m banning them from boats if anything big drops in the next few days. Boats are now bad.

In our biggest news, the main cast for The Mandalorian was announced this week. As was rumored, Pedro Pascal is the lead and we’re getting GUS FREAKING FRINGE in Star Wars?! Also, Werner Herzog? WERNER HERZOG? This is madness, y’all.

If you’ve been waiting to watch Solo: A Star Wars Story with a click of your remote, it’s coming to Netflix on January 9th! Expect an uptick in my tweets about my precious daughter Qi’ra. Tragically, Rogue One is leaving Netflix on January 18th because the Force giveth and the Force taketh away.

Finally, if you’re missing Star Wars Resistance already, head on over to the Disney Channel’s YouTube channel! Over the next few weeks, they’ll be posting 12 new shorts to help tide you over. The first three are already live and pretty adorable. Resistance will be back sometime in January.

This is our final Holonet Blast for the year because it is the holidays and your resident Managing Editor would like to take a nap for the next two weeks. We’ll be back in the New Year.

Our Favorite Books of 2018

As you may or may not have noticed, we’re kinda fond of reading around here. In fact, we like reading so much that we even read lots of books that have nothing to do with Star Wars! (Shocking, I know.) Because 2018 has lasted for approximately forty-thousand years, we thought it’d be nice to look back at some of our favorite books that have been released over the last twelve months because everyone can always add to their ‘to be read’ list, right?

Read on for three recs from each of us! Continue reading

Resistance Review: Secrets and Holograms

Okay, it’s official: I have a Doza bias.

Torra is very tired of being confined to her room by her well meaning father. Kaz has been tasked by Poe to find out more about this potential deal between Captain Doza and the First Order. That same First Order is currently visiting the base to discuss further details of the agreement. This is going to go exactly as you think. Continue reading

Holonet Blast #83

Heeeeeello and welcome to another edition of the Holonet Blast that will not feature any casting discussion for The Mandalorian since they’re all still rumors! Remember kids: it’s not confirmed until it’s on Star Wars dot com.

In confirmed news, we got a TON of amazing new information about Galaxy’s Edge including new John Williams composed music for the parks!!! Honestly… just go read up about it. I can’t do it just. This came one day after blueprints for the hotel planned for Galaxy’s Edge in Disney World surfaced. Warning: there’s going to be a reeeeeally long waiting list given the hotel’s capacity.

The closer we get to Celebration Chicago, the more these new blasts will be filled with guest announcements and we’re already getting a few. The Second City will be gracing Celebration with their presence. I have no idea who that is aside from the blerb about them but some folks seemed pretty excited so yay! Rob Bredow, Head of ILM, was also announced as the very first guest.

And finally, in not!Star Wars but still pop culture relevant news, Stan Lee passed away last week. We here at Tosche Station are grateful for his contributions to the comic book and superhero world and our thoughts are with his family.

Resistance Review: The Children from Tehar

The First Order is definitely here to stay in Star Wars Resistance as they rear their shiny helmeted heads on the Colossus for a second episode in a row. Kaz has once again managed to break something in his role as a supposed mechanic and promises to pay to replace the very expensive part. In desperate need of a lot of credits fast, he’s immediately intrigued by the promise of 20,000 credits for finding two runaway children. The kids, however, don’t want to be found and for good reason: it’s the First Order looking for them. Now it’s up to Kaz and Neeku to figure out a way to help them even though it also means sacrificing any chance of getting the credits to buy a new part. Continue reading
