Celebration 2017: Interview with Charles Soule

He hasn’t gotten any less busy since the last time we chatted but Charles Soule was kind enough to sit down with me after the big Marvel panel at Star Wars Celebration last week. We talked about his relatively recently announced Darth Vader book and his continuing work on Poe Dameron including a very in depth look at today’s issue.

Warning! This interview contains spoilers for Poe Dameron #13 and I mean major spoilers. They are all in the back half of the interview so you can safely read until the first mention of the Poe book. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Bria for Tosche Station: So you still haven’t talked them into giving you a Palpatine book then? Just a Vader one?

Charles Soule: Yeah but a Vader book is by definition almost a Palpatine book at the same time. They’re still very, very intertwined. The story that I’m telling in the Vader book has Palpatine as the only point of connection that Vader has left anymore. He’s the only person he can turn to for any sort of advice or guidance. His physicality is completely different and completely changed. He has no anchor point except Palpatine, which Palpatine of course knows and realizes and uses to manipulate Vader further in the great tragedy that is Darth Vader’s life. Continue reading

Holonet Blast #8

Slow news week in the lead-up to Celebration; we’ve got one bit of convention news, and one HUGE piece of publishing news!

The convention news is: Forest “SAVE THE DREAM!” Whitaker will be at Star Wars Celebration! He will be signing autographs at the Star Wars Celebration Autograph Hall. Please scream-whisper your best crazy Saw impressions at him for me. (source)

The other piece of news is a huge deal: As part of the Star Wars 40th Anniversary, Del Rey has announced From A Certain Point of View, an anthology of 40 Star Wars short stories by a murderer’s row of talent — ranging from old Star Wars hands like Jason Fry and Christie Golden, to newcomers like Meg Cabot and Paul Dini, to podcast darlings Ben Acker & Blacker and Griffith McElroy. The project sounds like the Tales From … anthologies published way back in the Bantam days, as it concerns itself with the characters filling out the background in A New Hope. The anthology is due to be published in October, and you can see a partial list of the contributing authors at the (source).

That’s it for now! Enjoy those Rogue One Blu-rays, enjoy Celebration, and we’ll see you back here in two weeks!

Holonet Blast #7

We know no news but Celebration news and that news is about more guests! No seriously: that’s just about all we’ve got this week. Over the last week, Star Wars Celebration announced some new autographing guests and, well, let’s just cover these from the least to the most surprising, shall we?

  1. Steve Blum
  2. Tiya Sircar
  3. Mark Hamill
  4. Temeura Morrison
  5. Denis Lawson
  6. Hayden Christensen

Do not adjust your monitors. You read those last two right. We’re Club Wedge around here but we also acknowledge that Denis Lawson is probably the only person less into the whole Star Wars thing than Harrison Ford hence our complete and utter states of shock. On the other hand, Hayden hasn’t been to a Celebration since 2002. (Hey Fandom: Please be nice and polite to him. He is a human being and does not deserve to be treated poorly.)

You can catch both Mark and Hayden on the 40th Anniversary Panel on Thursday morning and Mark will also be hosting a Tribute to Carrie Fisher panel on Friday and have his own panel on Sunday. The full panel schedule is also now available.

Speaking of available things, you can now get yourself a Tosche Station t-shirt! They are the hot new fashion choice for Celebration and you can trust me on that because I am also a geek fashion blogger.

And that’s it for this week. Celebration is almost here!

Only a few items of note this week, so let’s get to them!

OMAR JOINS HAN

Michael Kenneth Williams, perhaps best known as Omar on The Wire, has joined the as-yet-untitled Han Solo spinoff film! That’s literally all we know; no character hints whatsoever. Seems like LFL is at least starting to get the “wow, that’s a lot of white folks” memo, though. Faster than Marvel is, at any rate. (Source)

Lots of news this week! New books! New The Last Jedi details! New hair! Let’s dive right in, shall we?

ARTOO-DETOO RECAST

Though rumored as early as December 2015, it’s now official; following the death of original Star Wars actor Kenny Baker, going forward (beginning with this December’s The Last Jedi) the adorable astromech will be portrayed by Doctor Who veteran Jimmy Vee. I guess this makes him R2-D2-2. (source)

Drowning in Moonlight: a Carrie Fisher Memorial Benefit Gala

Going to Celebration Orlando?

Enjoy food, drinks, cosplay, door prizes, and awesome items to bid on?

You’re in luck.

Drowning in Moonlight is a memorial benefit in honor of Carrie Fisher (1956-2016) and in the service of The Midnight Mission – a cause that was close to Ms. Fisher’s heart. The gala will be held on Thursday, the 13th of April, 2017 in Orlando, Florida in concert with Star Wars Celebration Orlando. The event will feature an ever-growing list of prominent Celebration personalities, sponsors, and fan sites including yours truly, Full of Sith, Jedi News, Star Wars Report, and more.

Drowning in Moonlight will be a “Dress-up or Dress Up” gala: Black tie optional, cosplay encouraged! The night’s activities will feature:

Music and dancing
Door Prizes
A guestbook for fans to express their condolences which will be forwarded to Carrie’s family after the gala
Event-specific merchandise (patches, stadium cups, etc.) available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the charity
Souvenir photos on an event-exclusive backdrop
Food and a Carrie-themed drink menu including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic offerings
A silent auction featuring nerdy and literary goodies from Star Wars and beyond

The Marquee event of the night will be a live-on-stage, multi-network, unified podcast in Carrie’s honor. Podcasters from all of the networks involved will be invited onto the stage to take part in this unprecedented collaborative recording party. The production, which will feature voices from around the Star Wars podcasting pantheon, will include questions from the audience and likely some measure of hijinks.

Drowning in Moonlight aims to celebrate Carrie in a way that honors her memory, does good in her name, and pays homage to her unrivaled sass.
