Holonet Blast #49

Last week saw the end of Star Wars Rebels and the promise of a new live-action show. One thing’s for sure–we’re not going to have a dearth of Star Wars material to cover anytime soon. Let’s recap on the weekly Holonet Blast!

Star Wars Rebels came to a close with a two-part, hour and a half episode on Monday. The cast and creators discussed the finale in Entertainment Weekly, as well as what’s to come in Star Wars animation. Basically: we don’t know yet! But we will eventually. io9 also had the scoop on fan favorite Legends character Gilad Pellaeon who briefly appeared (offscreen) in the finale. Good news: he’s not dead!

Star Wars TV won’t be the sole realm of animation for much longer. Prior to last week’s earnings call, the official site announced that Jon Favreau will executive produce and write a new live-action TV series. What’s it about? Where’s it set? Who’ll be in it? Who knows! Like the previously-announced film series by Rian Johnson and the Game of Thrones showrunners, we’ll find out more about the live action show eventually.

Did you enjoy Leia: Princess of Alderaan? Do you like manga? Well,  you’re in luck! Claudia Gray’s novel is due for the manga treatment that was previously given to her novel Lost Stars.  It will be released, fittingly, on May 4.

Finally, in Solo: A Star Wars Story news, we might be getting the greatest advertising tie-in known to man with Solo branded SOLO cups. Also, Denny’s meals.

Ron Howard tweeted from the first scoring session of the film, which is due for release on May 25. Composer John Powell also shared a photo on Facebook. It was previously announced that John Williams will compose an original theme for Han Solo.

That’s all for this week! Be sure to share your best Solo-themed Denny’s meal names in the comments.

Holonet Blast #48

Welcome back to another edition of the Holonet Blast! It’s was another quieter week so let’s get right to it.

The Official Site released the first excerpt from Last Shot and it features is ADORABLE and AMAZING and oh my god, I think most of the fandom already died from feels. Daniel José Older also talked to StarWars.com about working on the novel.

Entertainment Weekly gave us a first look at the deleted scenes that will be on The Last Jedi DVD and there are a lot of them. Can we have the DVD yet? Pleeeeeease?

In not confirmed but probable news, John Williams insinuated that Episode IX could be his last Star Wars film which would be sad but if the Rogue One soundtrack is anything to judge by, the future films will be okay.

We’re taking a detour away from Star Wars news for a moment but it’s still pretty relevant. The US release date for Infinity War has been bumped up a week so it’ll premiere in April instead.

And finally, in Oscars news, The Last Jedi won precisely no awards but the cast represented and looked good doing it. Oscar Isaac scratched BB-8’s belly on live television, Mark Hamill introduced himself to Gal Gadot, and Kelly Marie Tran look gorgeous and amazing and I’m pretty sure this video saved my life.

That’s all for this week! If you need me, I’ll be yelling at my phone about how we don’t deserve KMT.

Holonet Blast #47

Remember the past two weeks, when there was just SO MUCH STAR WARS NEWS that it  was hard to keep up with?

Yeah, well, it’s feast or famine with Star Wars, and this week, we went a little hungry.

But, there’s always something happening in the galaxy far, far away, and the biggest piece of news we got from Lucasfilm this week was the official trailer and announcement of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi Blu-ray, including 14(!) deleted scenes. No word on whether Chewie eats the porg.

Meanwhile, there was Star Wars news in our own galaxy as well, with the announcement that Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, and Kelly Marie Tran will be presenting at the 2018 Academy Awards. Hamill had an even bigger week when it was revealed that he will receive his own star (wars) on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next month.

And finally, we got a fresh look at the new Star Wars resort planned for the Walt Disney World Resort, and the odds of TS writers shelling out a small fortune to go there are high. They’re very high.

That’s it – at least until the next round of books/tv shows/movies is announced and SW Twitter loses its collective mind again. Until that time, may the Force be with you.

Holonet Blast #46

Welcome back to the Holonet Blast: our weekly look at the news from a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Solo Toys debut– and they are glorious!

Hasbro debuted the 6” Black series figures featuring the characters from Solo: A Star Wars Story this week at New York Toy Fair. Figures of Han Solo featuring Alden Ehrenreich’s likeness, the Imperial Range Trooper, and Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra have all been met with enthusiasm, but it’s Donald Glover’s likeness as Lando Calrissian—complete with billowing cape and raised eyebrow—that seems to be stealing the show. The toys are set to hit the market in advance of the film’s May 25th release date.

Ron Howard once again tweets hints to Solo

Once again, news from the making of Solo: A Star Wars Story comes to us in the form of a tweet from director Ron Howard. This week it was the news that Jon Favreau is joining the cast as the voice of “a very cool & important alien character”. It remains to be seen who the character is and what they add to the story, but Favreau’s addition to the cast is surely an exciting development.

More new Star Wars toys to include comic book and animated favorites

In additional news from New York Toy Fair, the Star Wars toy line is getting more than just the few Solo: A Star Wars Story figures previously unveiled.  Other characters from Solo, including Woody Harrelson’s Tobias Beckett and the Mimban Stormtrooper, are coming to the Black Series line as well as Princess Leia in her Hoth kit from The Empire Strikes Back, Admiral Holdo from The Last Jedi, and other familiar characters including Commander Wolffe from both The Clone Wars and Rebels.

The 3.75” Vintage Collection is getting additions from Solo, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rogue One, as well as a figure of Dr. Aphra from Marvel’s Star Wars Comic Books (a favorite of ours here at Tosche Station!).

A “lights and sound” Millennium Falcon (in its Solo: a Star Wars Story trim), new blasters, the “Ultimate Co-Pilot” interactive plush Chewbacca, and several toys compatible with Force Link 2.0 were also announced.

Solo tie-in books announced

For those of us who enjoy the added lore and fleshed-out backstories provided by Star Wars books, this week’s Solo: A Star Wars Story announcements were nothing short of giddy-making. In addition to the usual offerings of creative non-fiction, this week’s announcements included some buzz-worthy novels and comics. D.J. Older’s adult fiction novel Last Shot will take readers on an adventure spanning decades and will take us adventuring with Han and Lando both as the young scoundrels we will see in Solo and the old friends we know from  The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Rae Carson’s YA novel Most Wanted will take us deeper into Han Solo’s youth, his relationship with shadowy Qi’ra, and his hardscrabble life on the streets of Corellia. Joining the novels is the Lando: Double or Nothing comic mini series, a middle reader book featuring Chewbacca, a series of stories in the Star Wars Adventures comics, and the Little Golden Book I am a Wookiee.

Keep your eyes on Tosche Station for release dates and reviews of all the Solo tie-in reading.

Holonet Blast #45

SOLO WHAT A MAN SOLO. Yeah. That’s basically everything in our Holonet Blast this week. Well… almost everything.

Let’s just get this first one over with: David Benioff and DB Weiss of Game of Thrones fame are going to be making a series of Star Wars films. We don’t know what they’re about yet but we do know that yes, this is yet another film(s) being written by white guys. Give us a little diversity behind the camera, please.

In better news, Iger says that there are several TV series currently in development. Star Wars is launching a new Force For Change campaign which gives you for first shot at Solo merch.

Disney also gave us some more insight into Galaxy’s Edge. You can buy toys from a Toydarian and I don’t know why this delights me so much.

And now… Solo. So much Solo. EW unleashed an onslaught of articles: Emilia Clarke talks Qi’ra, why Ron Howard, jumped on board, the rogues gallery, an elite droid, LANDO!!!, and some Han Solo. And with that, go watch the trailer again. Because you can.

Holonet Blast #44

Happy February! Solo is real after all!

Yesterday’s Super Bowl  saw the premier of the first teaser for Solo:

A full trailer is planned to air during Good Morning America this morning, which should already have happened by the time you read this but I’m writing this in the past and sadly cannot link the trailer for you. Here’s the tweet that officially let us know:

In comics news, The Last Jedi is being adapted into six-issue limited series, featuring Gary Whitta as writer with art by Michael Walsh and Mike Spencer. The first issue will be available May 2 and second is schedule to release two weeks later on May 16.

Last but certainly not least, Natalie Portman hosted SNL this past Saturday and did a follow-up to the rap sketch she did when she hosted the show in 2006. The part about Star Wars is very memorable.

Happy Solo-really-does-exist week and may the Force be with you…always.

Holonet Blast #43

Star Wars, we got your Star Wars news here! Extra extra, read all about it!

The Academy Award nominations were announced on Tuesday, and The Last Jedi received four well-deserved nominations. Most notably, John Williams received his 51st nomination, more than any other living person on the planet Earth. (Walt Disney still has him beat, with 59 nominations.) The ceremony will be held on March 4.

Did you like The Last Jedi? Do you like books? Well, you’re in luck! The Last Jedi novelization by Jason Fry will be released on March 6, but if you’re attending Emerald City Comic Con, you’ll have the chance to enter a lottery to purchase an exclusive version of the novelization a few days early.

What about The Last Jedi and games? We’ve got you covered, too! Amilyn Holdo and Rose Tico have joined the playable characters in Galaxy of Heroes. Also, more updates are coming to Battlefront II and Season 2 of The Freemaker Adventures will be available on DVD on March 13th.

Finally, in a bit of bittersweet news, Carrie Fisher received a posthumous Grammy for Best Spoken Word album, The Princess Diarist. We miss you, Space Mom.

Holonet Blast #42

The Last Jedi‘s been out for a month now so you know what that means… it’s time for new Star Wars news.

This week’s REALLY BIG THING was everything Star Wars Rebels! The show will be returning on February 19th for three weeks straight of back to back episodes. Everything’s totally going to be fine.

We also got a synopsis for Solo and it’s… uhhh… expected? Yeah, let’s go with that. #TrailerWatch2018

And finally, we end this week’s news blast with sad news. Allison Shearmur, producer for both Rogue One and Solo has passed away at age 53. She also worked on the Hunger Games and her passing is a great loss to the film community.

Holonet Blast #41

Hello again and welcome to our weekly round up of News from a Galaxy Far, Far Away. Here are some tidbits from this past week:

Composer John Williams Could Make Even More Oscar History in 2018

Star Wars’ iconic composer, John Williams, currently has a total of 50 Academy Award nominations. Williams is the most nominated composer in the history of the Academy Awards and the most nominated living individual (coming second in overall nominations to Walt Disney’s 29). With two scored films under consideration for the 2018 Oscars (The Post, as well as Star Wars, The Last Jedi), Williams is posed to add to his own record with a possible 51st and 52nd nomination. If either of these scores comes out on top in 2018, it will be Williams first win since Schindler’s List (1993) although he has had 19 nominations in the interim. We’re definitely cheering for him from over here at Tosche Station.

Solo Trailer Incoming. Sometime.

Practically everything we know about Solo: A Star Wars Story we have learned from pinch-hitting director Ron Howard’s enthusiastic use of Twitter. His excitement for this project has heartened the fanbase—some of whom were initially lukewarm at the prospect of the film. Taking to Twitter in his signature fashion, Howard has let the fans know that with The Last Jedi now comfortable in theatres, a trailer for the Solo solo is in our future. But as with all of Howard’s 140-character communiques, this message was light on the details. There will be a trailer for Solo; Ron Howard says so. But we’re going to have to wait and see just when and where that trailer might be released.

New Mobile Game Celebrating Rivalries in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

This week, Disney and Lucasfilm announced a new real-time competitive-action shooter game designed for mobile devices. The game allows PvP action in the persona of some of the most iconic characters from the Star Wars franchise—and their equally iconic rivals (Han Solo vs Boba Fett, anyone?). Star Wars: Rivals is currently available for pre-registration on Google Play.

THRAWN: ALLIANCES Release Date Changes

Those of us waiting patiently for the release of Timothy Zahn’s upcoming release, Thrawn: Alliances are going to have to wait a little bit longer. Readers who had pre-ordered the book, set for release on June 26th of this year, received notification this week that the book’s launch has been pushed back to July 24th.

That’s all from this week!

Holonet Blast #40

It’s been a few weeks but the Holonet Blast is back! We took some time off for the holidays and to see this little film called The Last Jedi. You may have heard of it. It was the biggest film of 2017.

Solo will have music composed by John Powell but it will also have a main theme composed by John Williams himself.

If you are someone who runs or someone who is looking to be someone who runs but could use a little Star Wars-shaped motivation, prepare yourself: registration is open for the inaugural runDisney Star Wars Virtual Half Marathon. You can register for it through the end of February and complete it by March 31. Participants will receive an exclusive medal in the mail and can run anywhere; either do it all in one go or spread it out over several days. And if you’re planning on attending the Dark Side Half Marathon on April 22 at Walt Disney World, you can combine it with the virtual half marathon for the (brace yourself) Kessel Run Challenge. Yes, that is really what it’s called, yes, everyone in my family makes awful puns constantly, and, yes, I did groan at this one. Check out the link for more details.

In less athletic news, the official site has posted instructions for DIY porg nesting dolls! Like the run, you can make a friend and/or family event out of it, and like the run, you end up with a nifty Star Wars thing at the end!

Also Frank Oz is now on Twitter and is the hero we didn’t know we needed.

Until next time, goodbye and good luck in all your endeavors.
