Holonet Blast #120

Hello and welcome to a totally not late Holonet Blast that I definitely did not forget to do last night! Let’s just jump right in, shall we?

If you have a Nintendo Switch, you can now get Star Wars: Pinball for the platform if that’s your thing. The coolest thing here, in my opinion, is the inclusion of characters from Rebels!

On a video game related note, the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Limited Edition Art Book was announced last week. This edition will include concept art, a lithograph, and much more.

And finally, the official site released previews of the Age of Resistance: Rey and Age of Resistance: Rose comics. I am looking forward to both of these issues and not just because I contributed to them in a tiny way.

And that’s it for this week! Tune in next week for yet another totally timely weekly round up of Star Wars news!

Holonet Blast #119

Hello Friends! Welcome once again to our weekly roundup of news from a galaxy far, far away.

As we approach the November 12 launch date for The Mandalorian on Disney+, more and more exciting info is coming to us. This week we heard some specifics from show runner Jon Favreau, director Dave Filoni, and lead actor Pedro Pascal on what makes his character different from the Fett fellows who first made the iconic armor famous. From the contrasts between heroism and villainy, to the differences in cultural connections to Mandalore and the Mandalorian way of navigating life, the galaxy, and everything– the series as-yet-unnamed (to us, anyway!) will most certainly be new and different.

And in further, possibly even more exciting Mandalorian news: it was announced this week that part of the show’s lore will explore the early origins and gradual rise of the First Order— a series of events long speculated about by fandom. Director Dave Filoni says they plan to use elements from across the various media of Star Wars storytelling to show what the galaxy far, far away was like just after the defeat of the Empire. The show will examine what kinds of conditions existed that could have led to the First Order’s formation, growth, and ultimate ability to wreak vengeance on the Republic.

In a bit of non-Mandalorian news, gamers will be happy to learn that two classic titles: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy are being given new life on new consoles. Both games are coming for Nintendo Switch, with Jedi Outcast debuting in just a few weeks and Jedi Academy to follow in 2020. Both of these beloved titles come to the Switch with added functionality, including Gyro-Aiming support for the Switch’s Joy-Cons– while maintaining their much-celebrated online multiplayer battles. Both titles are also coming for PlayStation 4.

And if you’re in the mood for some more casual, but still engaging gaming, look no further than the new LEGO Star Wars Battles. The mobile game, headed our way in 2020, “brings together every era of Star Wars storytelling to collect, build, and fight in the greatest LEGO Star Wars battles the galaxy has ever seen”. Join the light side or the dark side and square off in head-to-head PvP battles in real time on your mobile device playing as your favorite Star Wars characters.  This one looks like fun, y’all.

That’s all I have this week. As always, send Star Wars news tips to Tosche Station and favorite bacon recipes to @MandaTheGinger

Holonet Blast #118

Something happened this week that no one — and I mean no one — could ever have expected.

Ewan McGregor set foot on a Lucasfilm stage, and his first words weren’t “hello there.”

It’s like they’ve never even been on the internet before.

But, I digress. Arguably the biggest news coming out of this weekend’s D23 Expo was confirmation of the long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series, which will start filming next year and air on Disney+. It will join a streaming lineup featuring The Mandalorian and a still-untitled show starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor and Alan Tudyk as K-2SO, both of which we also learned more about, including the first trailer for Jon Favreau’s wild western:

A complicated profession, indeed.

Arguably, though, The Mandalorian might not have even been the biggest highlight of the weekend (depending on what Star Wars project you’re most excited about right now), as Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and The Rise of Skywalker director JJ Abrams unveiled the first poster for the upcoming end of the Skywalker saga, and treated panel attendees to a sizzle real that featured, among other things, an image of Rey holding a double-bladed red lightsaber. The footage will be available to the public on Monday (likely right now, to be honest), so get those conspiracy engines up and running!

Are you tired of reading this news post yet? Cuz I’m tired of writing it. And yet, we continue on, because we have hope. There was even more unveiled at D23 Expo, including a first look at Vader Immortal: Episode II, the follow up to May’s inaugural at-home VR experience that launched on the Oculus Quest (though no release date was forthcoming). We also got introduced to the Halcyon, and Chandrila Star Line luxury cruiser that will play host to Galaxy’s Edge’s most exclusive attendee experience and allow parkgoers at Walt Disney World to completely immerse themselves in the galaxy far, far away. As if that wasn’t enough, D23 Expo also gave the world our first look at the newest First Order special forces trooper: the Jet Trooper. Oh, and the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be coming to Disney+ in February, 2020.

And that was just everything since Friday. Earlier in the week, we were treated to:

Ok, time to go drink a protein shake to recover from this ridiculously long news post. The things we do for you people.

Holonet Blast #117

Monday means it’s the news, y’all!

Should we start with the good news? Okay. So, Emmy nominated Star Wars Resistance has a SUUUPER LIT season two trailer out. Check it out. It premieres Sunday, October 6, on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW. The bad news? This will be its last season.

Nevertheless, season two opens with Kaz and his Colossus-mates on the run from the First Order. During the trailer we see a bunch of other familiar faces–Kylo, General Hux, Captain Phasma, as well as some new faces. Some of those new faces are voiced by an all star cast:

“Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike) as Ax Tagrin; Daveed Diggs (from the original Broadway cast of the musical Hamilton) as Norath Kev; Matthew Wood (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Kylo Ren, and Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) as the Aeosian Queen. Christopher Sean stars as Kazuda Xiono alongside co-stars: Suzie McGrath as Tam Ryvora; Scott Lawrence as Jarek Yeager; Myrna Velasco as Torra Doza; Josh Brener as Neeku Vozo; Donald Faison as Hype Fazon; Elijah Wood as Jace Rucklin; Jim Rash and Bobby Moynihan as Flix and Orka, respectively; Liam McIntyre as Commander Pyre; Jason Hightower as Captain Doza; and Sumalee Montano as Agent Tierny.”

Holy cast, Batman. Anyway, go check the trailer and then lament about it getting canceled with my Book Wars Pod co-hosts, Kate and Chris.

In other news this week, we got a peek into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Black Spire by Delilah S. Dawson, which is set to drop August 27. It tells the story of the Resistance arriving at Batuu, which also happens to be the setting at the Galaxy’s Edge themed land at some of the Disney Parks (hence the tie-in novel). If you were looking for more Vi Moradi (and if you weren’t, what is your deal?), you’ll find it here–and Leia too. In the exclusive excerpt from the forthcoming novel, we see General Leia Organa setting Vi on her new mission, and–spoiler alert–Captian Cardinal of “I tortured Vi Moradi” fame is going to be her partner. I, for one, cannot wait to read this and also probably cry because Delilah S. Dawson wrote it and she makes me FEEL my FEELINGS.

Until next week!

Holonet Blast #116

Hey everyone! It’s time for a Galaxy’s Edge-heavy edition of the Holonet Blast, which is appropriate considering I visited Galaxy’s Edge in Disney World for the very first time yesterday! It was absolutely amazing and everything I’ve ever wanted. I got to BE a Star War! But for now, on to the news!

First off, Luke Skywalker is your guide in a new book called The Secrets of the Jedi, by Marc Sumerak. It will be released on November 19 from Insight Editions, and will feature commentary from Luke on the Jedi Order throughout the past and into the present.

Star Wars Roll Out, a new series of animated shorts for the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel, debuted on August 9. Created by Hideo Itoyanagi, the shorts depict the Star Wars characters in the style of beloved droid BB-8. It looks adorable.

If you’re lucky enough to have been to Galaxy’s Edge, you know it has some of the best quick service meals on property, in addition to other treats and drinks. Thanks to a new cookbook, you can recreate these items at home. Released in November, just in time for the holiday season, the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Cookbook is also written by Sumerak and released by Insight Editions.

Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World opens on August 29, and to celebrate WDW will be hosting several merchandise events. Ashley Eckstein from Her Universe will be signing at Launch Bay Cargo in Hollywood Studios on August 17. Also at Launch Bay Cargo, on August 18, artists Craig Fraser, Kevin-John, William Silvers, and Charles Wissig will be meeting guests and signing art created just for Galaxy’s Edge. Finally, on August 28, authors Delilah Dawson and Zoraida Córdova will be available to sign copies of their novels Black Spire and A Crash of Fate, while comic creators Ethan Sacks and Will Sliney will be on hand to sign copies of the comic Galaxy’s Edge.

Won’t be able to get to Galaxy’s Edge on either coast for awhile? Don’t worry, Disney has got you covered. The Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge special will air on Freeform network on September 29, and will showcase all parts of the land, including a preview of the Rise of the Resistance attraction, scheduled to open in December in Walt Disney World and January in Disneyland.

That’s the news for the week! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to pass out and dream of Batuu all night long.

Holonet Blast #115

Hello and welcome to another Holonet Blast! We don’t have that much for you this week but, well, D23 is coming so might as well enjoy the calm before the storm, right?

Speaking of D23, attendees can expect to be the first to experience Disney+ before it launches in November. There will be a spotlight panel on Friday, August 23 and a Disney+ Pavilion on the Expo room floor.

Attendees of D23 will also be the first to get a sneak peak at Vader Immortal: Episode II. That panel will also be on Friday.

And finally, while this isn’t *precisely* news, I’m going to talk about it here anyways. A Crash of Fate will be in bookstores everywhere tomorrow and we’ll have a review posted BUT! If you’re in the DC/Virginia area, consider coming out to One More Page on Saturday. I’ll be doing a Q&A with author Zoriada Córdova at 3pm and then there will be a signing with Zoraida afterwards. Plus, you’ll have the chance to support a wonderful indie bookstore. Come talk Star Wars with us! It’ll be fun!

Holonet Blast #114

Hey there everyone! News this week has been slight, which is no big surprise following San Diego Comic Con. But there is one delightful development to report.

Star Wars Resistance Season One is coming to DVD (but not to BluRay). The Emmy-nominated animated series will hit the home video market on August 20th and will include all 21 episodes from Season One and content the producers are calling “essential bonus features” including audio commentary, bonus shorts, and a sneak peek behind the scenes. The DVDs should hit stores just in time for fans to brush up on the series before Season 2 begins this fall.

As always, send Star Wars news tips to Tosche Station, and send Resistance Season 2 predictions to @MandaTheGinger

Holonet Blast #112

Do you enjoy announcements about future announcements and dates? Then boy howdy will you enjoy this week’s Holonet Blast!

First and foremost, mark your calendars for August 23 – that’s when we’re most likely to see a sneak peak of The Mandalorian, airing at D23 Expo along with a discussion with Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and other special guests. One might expect a trailer or some sort of public footage coming out of that event, based on the fact that the series launches a few months later, so fingers crossed!

But before you put down that pen (you wrote this on a physical calendar, right? Do people still have those?), go ahead and circle December 5 and January 17, too – that’s when the all-new “Rise of the Resistance” attraction will open in Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, respectively. We still don’t know a ton about Rise, other than the fact that, in contrast to Smuggler’s Run which takes place primarily in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, this new experience will involve movement, VR, and more. It also places Batuuans in the heart of the action during a battle between the Resistance and the First Order. Start saving those credits now!

Finally, we got our first look at Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker‘s iconic new trooper. Rogue One had Death Troopers, The Last Jedi had Praetorian Guards, and TROS will have Sith troopers. Attendees at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con 2019 will get a full look at the armor in person in the Lucasfilm pavillion, while the rest of us can scour eBay for the exclusive merch from Funko, Hasbro, and others. No word on whether or not these troopers are, in fact, the Senate.

That’s it for this week – stay hydrated and wear sunscreen, my friends.

Holonet Blast #111

It’s time for a triple 1 Holonet Blast! There’s not a lot of news to report this week, being a holiday weekend and all, but don’t worry. We’re not empty handed!

First off, Daisy Ridley has been making the rounds for Ophelia and dropped some tidbits about The Rise of Skywalker. Read the articles in USA Today, in which she talks fan theories, and in Vulture, in which she talks about her hug with Carrie Fisher from the teaser trailer. Ridley also was interviewed on Good Morning America and stated she thinks fans will be satisfied and called Episode IX a brilliant end to the story. Yeah, I’m excited!

Sadly, in much less cool news, Riz Ahmed recently revealed that he had to cancel his Celebration Chicago appearance due to being detained at the airport. Ahmed spoke at a leadership summit about the issues faced by Muslims. Not only is it disappointing Ahmed wasn’t able to greet fans, but it’s also an ugly reminder of the racial profiling and discrimination that occurs in our society.

Today was the Women’s World Cup Final (Go USA!) and Walt Disney Studios dropped a teaser for the live action Mulan film, releasing next March. I’m usually not super excited about Disney’s live action versions of their cartoon films, but this one looks to be not an adaptation but rather an original take on the Mulan story. The teaser was excellent and I’m really excited to see how the film turns out.

That’s all for this week’s Holonet Blast. See y’all next week!

Holonet Blast #110

Welcome back to another edition of the Holonet Blast where we’ve got a wide assortment of news from around the galaxy for you.

In gaming news, if your interest has been piqued by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the Game Director released the full demo from E3 last week. It’s 25 minutes of play that was previously only shown behind closed doors and gives you an even better idea of what to expect from the game this fall.

In book and comic news, Star Wars is going to be included in the landmark Marvel #1000 issue in August. Charles Soule and Terry Dodson have creator duties for the one page story and are just one of eighty other creator teams taking part in Marvel extravaganza. Del Rey also released an excerpt from this month’s Thrawn: Treason in which a lot of high ranking Imperials sit down for a very nice and friendly chat and are definitely all friends. If audio’s your thing, there’s a little something there for you too. (The excerpt has zero Eli Vanto though so fair warning.)

SDCC convention exclusives were also announced this week. If you’re heading to the con later this month or have a really good friend willing to brave the lines for you, check them out. Or check them out even if you’re not going and drool with envy with the rest of us.

Finally, in geek fashion news, you’ll soon be able get Star Wars  themed shoes from TOMS. The collection launches this week online and in stores and will feature designs inspired by the Original Trilogy. (On a related note, Po-Zu’s summer sale is currently going on and some of their Star Wars designs are included for pretty darn good prices so check it out.)

And that’s it for this week! For those of you in the States, have a safe holiday weekend and for the rest of you, enjoy your week!
