Holonet Blast #69

Welcome to our weekly roundup of news. Early this week I was beginning to wonder if maybe I’d have nothing to report, but Star Wars came through in a big way in time for this post.

Thrawn: Alliances

This week’s addition to the Star Wars canon from our folks at Del Rey Books is Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn: Alliances. The new book is getting rave reviews from fans of the Thrawn of Legends as well as those who were only introduced to the character via his appearances on Star Wars Rebels. Have a look at our Staff’s GO/NO GO article, and Bria’s REVIEW to know more about this newest adventure featuring our favorite Chiss Grand Admiral.

Fox shareholders okay Disney deal

For those of you who follow Lucasfilm’s parent company, Disney, on the corporate level, it is important to note that this week the contentious acquisition of much of the Murdoch media empire was finalized. The $71.3 billion purchase includes film properties such as Avatar and the X-Men series, television including The Simpsons and This is Us, the FX family of cable networks and National Geographic, and the streaming service Hulu. The deal must be approved by regulators in more than a dozen countries, but has been approved by shareholders in the US and abroad.

Cast announced for Star Wars Episode IX

The big news out of Lucasfilm this week was the announcement of the principal cast for the next (and reportedly final) episode in the Skywalker saga. Sequel Trilogy stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac were no surprise. TFA and TLJ veterans Domnhall Gleeson, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Billie Lourd, and Lupita Nyong’o will also be returning. New cast members announced include The Americans’ Keri Russell, well-known British character actor Richard E. Grant, and 2017 BIFA Most Promising Newcomer award winner Naomi Ackie.

While I was pleased as punch to hear of both the returning cast and the newcomers,  it was the news of certain members of the Original Trilogy cast that got me gushing. Mark Hamill’s return to the role of Luke Skywalker has many people speculating as to whether he will appear in flashbacks or as a Force Ghost to live up to his iconic pledge to “see ya ’round, kid”. Either way, fans will once again get to see Luke Skywalker on screen, and that is never a bad thing. Anthony Daniels will once again don his signature golden plates as C-3PO. And in a delightful surprise, it has been announced that Billy Dee Williams will once again bring Lando Calrissian to the screen.

But the news that had me in tears was that the role of Leia Organa will once again be played by the late Carrie Fisher. Since Carrie’s untimely passing in December of 2016, there has been much speculation as to what would happen to the character in the final episode of the saga. Director J. J. Abrams has announced that there is enough existing footage of Fisher’s Leia to tell her story to its conclusion. The choice to use existing footage (and likely ADR) possibly alongside body and photo doubles as opposed to digitally re-creating the actress in total or re-casting the role was the one I was hoping the team would make and has been signed off on by Carrie’s daughter, Billie and her brother, Todd.

John Williams will be scoring the film.

Principal Photography on Episode IX is slated to begin August 1 at Pinewood Studios in London.

The film’s release is currently scheduled for December of 2019.

That’s it for this week’s news from a Galaxy Far, Far Away. Send Star Wars news tips to us here at Tosche Station and send Carrie Fisher feels to @MandaTheGinger.

Holonet Blast #68

It’s San Diego Comic-Con week which means there’s a heck of a lot of news so let’s get right to it!

To start off, we have the home release dates for Solo! It will be available in the US on digital, Movies Anywhere, and 4K UHD on September 14th and on Blu-Ray on the 25th.

And if you like Hallmark Star Wars goodies, you can take a peak at some of their 2019 product line up, including mugs, itty bitties, a wookiee apron (I have…concerns……..about this product’s implications………….), and ornaments (SCOUT TROOPER ON A SPEEDER BIKE!!).

Meanwhile, STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS IS COMING BACK! Certainly one of, if not the, biggest Star Wars announcements to come out of San Diego Comic-Con this past week, there are 12 new episodes coming to Disney’s streaming service at a yet-to-be-announced date. We don’t yet have a ton of information about the new episodes, but we have a teaser trailer and the announcement on the official site includes an interview with showrunner Dave Filoni about the show’s return, so check that out!

Hasbro has some neat new releases coming up including Black Series figures for Chopper and Ezra and another Darth Revan figure.

In comics news, IDW will be releasing an all-ages five-issue mini-series of spooky Star Wars tales throughout October, called Tales from Vader’s Castle. It will feature characters from across the Star Wars timeline, including characters from Rebels, Dooku, ewoks, someone from Adventures of Wild Space, and more. You can read an interview with the creative team in the link.

And, finally, you can check out the highlights of the SDCC Star Wars publishing panel here. A lot happened. Like a Padmé novel by E.K. Johnston and a Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan novel by Claudia Gray! The link has a full list of the recently announced upcoming releases but other notable ones include a Solo comic adaptation and a maxi-series that will cover all three film eras.

Holonet Blast #67

Lando’s not a system, he’s a character in Star Wars  Episode IX.

At least, that’s the rumor that sent shock waves through Star Wars twitter this week when The Hollywood Reporter… well… reported that the one and only William December Williams will be back in the galaxy far, far away next year (and, it’s only fair to note that Fantha Tracks had this rumor nearly a month ago). Normally, we take rumors like this with a grain of salt, but when the second unit director of the movie itself tweets about it, well, that feels like a confirmation to me.

Lando isn’t the only returning fan-favorite we heard about this week, as StarWars.com and Del Rey Publishing released a new excerpt of the upcoming Thrawn: Alliances featuring the one and only Senator Padmé Amidala (not to mention a fantastic poster of her that will be featured in the Barnes & Noble edition of the book). Alliances is due out next week and, based on this excerpt, it seems like Padmé will be a major character in the flashback portions of the book, the first time we’ve seen her in a big role since Disney took over the franchise.

Speaking of the Clone Wars era, StarWars.com also announced the panelists on this week’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars 10th anniversary panel at San DIego Comic-Con, including showrunner and hat aficionado Dave Filoni, composer Kevin Kiner, producer Athena Portillo, and a few familiar voices from the cast. In other Star Wars animation news, the fourth and final season of Star Wars Rebels was nominated for three Emmys this week, including Outstanding Children’s Program. (You know what would have been more outstanding? If KANAN DIDN’T DIE -Kate)

Finally, the whole bunch of book and merchandise news rounded out a surprisingly busy week in Star Wars, led by the announcement of Star Wars: Droidography, a deep dive into everyone’s favorite mechanical characters told from the perspective of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures’s Roger. Hasbro announced their San Diego Comic-Con exclusives (porgs!), EA announced what’s coming up for the Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes mobile game, and Fantasy Flight Games released one expansion set for Star Wars: Legion and announced two more. (Side note: if any readers in the Washington, DC area play Legion… let me know. I need more friends.)

That’s (finally) it for this week! Be good to each other, drive trolls off Twitter, and as always, may the Force be with you.

Commander Cody… Execute Holonet Blast #66

Hilariously enough, there’s uhhh basically no news this week? I mean, we’ve got a new URL which is news for us. (Look Ma! No hyphen!) Aside from that though… There ain’t much. (And no, we’re not counting that Resistance art or the Keri rumor as news because… they’re not.)

What we do have though is the announcement of the Star Wars Fan Awards! Lucasfilm announced this week that they are expanding their traditional fan film awards to also include categories for Photos and Visual Art.

Aside from that… yeah, I’ve got nothing so please enjoy this picture of John Boyega on a horse.

Happy Sunday ❤

Holonet Blast #65

It’s a little late (thanks, site issues!) but it’s time for this week’s Holonet Blast! And boy, is this week relevant to my interests.

The official site posted a new excerpt from Thrawn Alliances by Timothy Zahn, out on July 25, featuring Commander Mitth’raw’nuruodo of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force (call him Thrawn, please) with Jedi General Anakin Skywalker of the Republic. Not only that, but Del Rey announced that a convention exclusive version of the novel (autographed by Zahn!) will be offered at San Diego Comic Con, complete with a grand admiral insignia pin and tote bag. The exclusive cover shows Young (Hot) Thrawn with Anakin Skywalker in his Clone Wars era armor. I am a very big fan of this cover and will be posting a printout on my cubicle wall very shortly. Here it is on the right, in case you missed it (and because I want to look at it again).

Speaking of The Clone Wars and San Diego Comic Con, there will be a special 10th anniversary panel at San Diego Comic Con, hosted by Amy Ratcliffe. No details yet, but this will be one to attend for all fans of the animated series.

Star Wars won big at the Saturn Awards, with Rebels taking the prize for Best Animated TV Series and The Last Jedi winning Best Actor (Mark Hamill), Best Screenplay (Rian Johnson) and Best Editing (Bob Duscay). Congratulations to all the winners (especially Mark Hamill)!

In more news for Rebels fans, the fourth season will be released on Blu Ray July 31.

Want to learn some life and leadership lessons from Star Wars? DK Publishing has you covered. You can choose the light side and Be More Yoda or the dark side and Be More Vader, both by Christian Blauvelt.  Both books will be released on October 2.

Holonet Blast #64

It’s the news, y’all!

Fairly light week for actual news, but you know you can always check back here when The Last Jedi remake finally happens.

First, some toy news. In August, Funko will be coming out with its popular (and aptly named) Pop! figures from The Clone Wars television series that ran from 2008-2015. We can expect Anakin (complete with all his limbs), Obi-Wan, Yoda and TWO Ahsoka figurines (one of which will be a Hot Topic exclusive). If you need me, I’ll be in the corner rocking back and forth at the (extremely unlikely) possibility of finally getting a Pop! Fives.

Over in France, ILMxLAB and The VOID won two Cannes Lions Digital Craft awards for their incredible work on Secrets of the Empire hyper-reality experience. Now… who wants to fly me to Orlando or Anaheim so I can actually go play and write a first-hand account for TSR?!

And let’s not to forget to congratulate our friends over at The Star Wars Show for their 100th episode! (Does anyone actually know any of the cast and/or crew so we can be real friends? Asking for a me.) There was singing, there was dancing, there were several red Millennium Falcon shirts.

That’s it for now! Going to moonwalk into the night and go see Solo again.

Holonet Blast #63

Hello again, friends! It’s time for our weekly roundup of news from a galaxy far, far away (and beyond!)

Jim Rash Talks Resistance

Actor/writer Jim Rash sat down with ET this week to talk about his recently released film Bernard & Huey (June 8). During the interview, there is a little talk about his character in Star Wars, Resistance. For those of you, like me, who are hungry and excited for any information we can get regarding the show, the Star Wars stuff begins about 5:50 into the video!

First Look at San Diego Comic Con Hasbro Exclusives

Entertainment Weekly got a sneak peek this week at some of the Star Wars exclusives coming to San Diego Comic Con from our friends at Hasbro. The two previewed collectibles are both iconic scenes from the franchise’s history of cool face-offs. The first captured the epic lightsaber battle between Rey and Kylo Ren in the snowy forest of Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens; the second a showdown between Han Solo and a mynock, famously occurring in the belly of a space slug in The Empire Strikes Back. These collectibles and more will be available exclusively to attendees at San Diego Comic Con. More info can be found HERE.

A Guide to the Galaxy

This week the folks at Fantasy Flight Games released a preview of the Star Wars Sourcebook to be included in the Star Wars Roleplay Game 30th Anniversary Edition. The Sourcebook, an update to the original 1987 release, goes in-depth on some of Star Wars’ most recognizable content including exacting detail on favorite starships and a guide to constructing accurate and believable alien characters. The Star Wars Roleplay Game 30th Anniversary Edition is available for pre-order HERE.

Wonder Woman 1984 Photos Looking Cool on Twitter

In a non-Star Wars, but still awesome development this week, cast and crew of the upcoming feature Wonder Woman 1984 gave us a look into the world of the film. Both Gal Godot (Wonder Woman) and director Patty Jenkins have tweeted stills from the film. The visuals are everything one might hope for from a comic book jaunt into the fabulous 1980’s and I cannot wait to see more! Read the tweets and see the pictures for yourself HERE (Patty Jenkins) and HERE (Gal Godot)!

That’s all there is from us this week. As always, be sure to send Star Wars and geek culture news tips to us here at Tosche Station, and May The Force Be With You!

Holonet Blast #62

After last week’s fairly light week, this week brings us quite a bit to talk about! Let’s jump right in, starting with the copious amounts of video game news.

Battlefront II is getting more content, starting with a continuation of Han Solo Season, bringing you more Solo content this Tuesday, June 12. This includes new locations (KESSEL!),  new appearances, and more. In July, Battlefront II will also see the addition of a new Starfighter Mode, which will focus on piloting (and destroying) Hero ships, and EA promises another, larger-scale mode later this year. Finally (as far as this week’s Battlefront news, that is), new Clone Wars content is coming to your consoles this fall, including Heroes Anakin, Obi-Wan, Dooku, and Grievous and also Geonosis. I would make a Clone Wars pun here if I could think of anything other than droids saying “roger, roger.”

One more piece of videogame news: EA has announced an action RPG coming from Respawn Entertainment during the 2019 holidays. A single-player RPG! I’m excited! Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be set after Revenge of the Sith and will follow a Padawan that survived the purge. No word yet on whether the Padawan will be customizable.

In less video game-related news that is still kind of video game-related, the virtual reality company The Void is opening nine new locations across the US. You might know them as the folks behind Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, but I sure don’t because I haven’t been to a Disney Park since last Celebration. No word yet on when the new experience centers will be opening or what experiences will be involved.

In Star Wars Celebration news, while some Celebration Chicago tickets are still available, both the 5-day tickets and the Saturday tickets are sold out. If you are hoping to attend, it is highly recommended you not delay your ticket purchases.

One last, not-Star Wars thing before I leave you to enjoy your week: ANIMATED MILES MORALES SPIDER-MAN MOVIE IN THEATERS THIS DECEMBER:

https://twitter.com/SpiderVerse/status/1004347175948693504?s=19

SPIDER-GWEN AND PETER PARKER ARE IN IT, TOO, BECAUSE IT’S INTO THE SPIDERVERSE

*ahem*

See you next time!

Holonet Blast #61

If you’re Star Wars, what do you do the week after you release your new movie?

Turns out, not much.

It was a quiet week in the galaxy far, far away, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no news. We did get a new look at the many books related to Solo: A Star Wars Story – including a few previously-unannounced titles. Sure, you already knew about Last ShotMost Wanted, and of course The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear! But this week we (finally) got an official announcement about the Solo novelization, which will be written by Mur Lafferty and be released on September 4. Lafferty is no stranger to Star Wars, having previously written the short stories “The Voice of the Empire” Star Wars Insider and “Not for Nothing” in From a Certain Point of View. Other newly-announced titles include Star Wars: Scum and Villainy – Case Files on the Galaxy’s Most Notorious by Pablo Hidalgo and Solo: Tales from Vandor by Jason Fry.

The Star Wars Celebration website also went live. Be sure to check it out for all ticket and hotel related information and more.

Finally, it may not be Solo-related, but another book was announced this week when StarWars.com revealed Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy. This exciting new title will gather 75 profiles on the female characters from the Star Wars films, cartoons, novels, comics, and more. Written by Amy Ratcliffe, the book will also include artwork from 18 female and non-binary artists, showcasing the kind of diversity and representation that we hope to see more of on the creative side.

That’s all for this week, friends – may the Force be with you.

Holonet Blast #60

Solo, what a man! Last week saw the release of a BRAND NEW STAR WARS MOVIE! That never gets old, does it? Solo: A Star Wars Story opened Thursday night in the United States, and is tracking to make $101 million over the long Memorial Day weekend. Sadly, this is under projections, but word of mouth has been pretty solid, so hopefully it will experience less of a drop than The Last Jedi or Rogue One in its second weekend. (Regular reminder that The Force Awakens was a huge anomaly that will most likely not be repeated any time soon in Star Wars.)

In related news, don’t forget to check out Most WantedThe Art of SoloSolo: A Visual Guide, and the Solo soundtrack, all released on May 25. A new Forces of Destiny short was also released on Friday featuring Solo‘s Qi’ra. She was not voiced by Emilia Clarke, but rather Olivia Hack. A Beckett comic one-shot is also incoming.

Feel like watching a different Star Wars movie from your various streaming devices? You’re in luck! The Last Jedi will drop on Netflix on June 26.

Finally, we got a bunch of Galaxy’s Edge news over the past week, thanks in part to the Galactic Nights event held at Hollywood Studios. The Disney Parks blog announced that Galaxy’s Edge will open in Disneyland in Summer 2019 and in Walt Disney World in late Fall 2019. Start planning your vacations now! Or, probably, wait for firmer dates so you’re not disappointed. WDW News Today reported that a patent reveals the development of a virtual narrative system coming to Galaxy’s Edge. This tracks with previous reports and rumors regarding a reputation system that will be used in the land. The Galaxy’s Edge panel at Galactic Nights revealed that the name of the village guests will visit on Batuu is called “Black Spire Village.” (Keep an ear out for this name in Solo!) Black Spire Outpost will also feature LOTHCATS and awesome rides, while ligthsabers might coming to the Star Wars hotel. We simply cannot wait for all the Star Wars fun to come at Disney parks.

That’s it for the Holonet Blast this week. Now go catch another viewing of Solo!
