Sometimes? A Person gets a very bad idea and then the Captain of the Blog she writes for encourages her to follow through on this very bad idea. (It’s probably revenge for being a costume enabler.) In this case? Bria has decided to reread her way through the Expanded Universe and to bring you along on this crazy journey. It’ll also probably include some gifs to properly express the craziness.
First let me clarify that I am in no way reading ALL of the EU. My hat is off to Pablo Hidalgo for managing that feat and I do not wish to try and replicate it. Plus, I wouldn’t be able to include beautifully done Expanded Universe artwork with my reviews. I’m also not even going to read my way through all of the books on the official list that lives in front of all the EU books because I simply do not have all of those books available to me.
Here’s how this is going to work. I’ll be starting chronologically and reading my way through my own personal Star Wars book collection. I will also be rereading and reading some books for the first time that I am able to get from the library and/or also interest me. I’m going to make every effort to try and get my hands on and either read or reread as many of the books that I don’t own as I can. There are some very notable exceptions that I just will not reread (coughBlackFleetcough) however feel free to try and bribe me into reading them. (Brian’s already agreed to reread Revenge of the Sith and get all of the emotional trauma that goes with it in exchange for me rereading The Crystal Star.)
I’ll be posting my thoughts on the books every now and then and keep you all updated on my progress! I’ll be reviewing either series or multiple books at a time so I’m not flooding the blog with a post every day. Check out the coded book list below to see what books I’ll (hopefully) soon be reading! (A ~ indicates I have never read the book before and a * indicates that I have previously read it but do not own it.) If you’d like to follow my real time reading progress, you can follow me on twitter @chaosbria or the hashtag #WaruExpress.

Wow, Bria. Are you sure you don’t have that entire list here?
Nah, I left out the Old Republic books, the Callista books, and the Black Fleet Crisis. And probably a few others. 😛
I am going to be laughing hysterically throughout this whole process #sorrynotsorry
Heyyyyy. No stealing my catchphrase hashtag! 🙁
I am impressed. I’ve been kind of following along with what’s been going on in the EU and have been coming up with a list of what I should read that I haven’t read yet. It’s around 55 books (although after reading your site I’ve been thinking about adding on another 10). The reason I haven’t done it is because I figure it would take me five to six years to do it. I’m really impressed that you’re going to read that list, but times two, and are capable of doing it waaay faster than I could do my list.
Also, about my list: I was originally planning on reading I, Jedi and then alternating between reading NJO and flipping back to Republic era novels as breaks/to fill the gaps with the books that are going to be referenced a lot (I wanted to catch up to the current books but don’t feel right skipping NJO), but after reading this site’s posts, I’m thinking of following the roadmap and reading through the (good) Bantam books I haven’t read before before starting the NJO (partially because it’ll make the NJO books make more sense but also because I’m starting to think it’s better to read good stuff instead of rushing ahead to read nine Troy Dennings novels. actually, maybe I’m trying to delay that happening 😛 ).
I’ll admit that my magical reading speed will come in handy here. (I reread the NJO in about a month or so last summer.) If you’d like some suggestions about some of the SWEU books you might’ve missed, I’d be happy to share my thoughts. I know that Brian didn’t delve into PT era suggestions for his master list but if that interests you, I definitely have some recs!
Also, some people have issues with the NJO but I personally think you should give it a read because when it’s good? It’s really good and makes it worth slugging through the less than stellar books.
I haven’t read anything past Dark Nest. Too much Troy Denning. (I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but his inability to finish a story is highly annoying).
Other than that I’ve read most of that list, however, not so much in recent years and I really need to catch up on the OR and Empire eras.
Most of the CW era books are pretty good, but personally I found Labyrinth of Evil hard to get through.
You’re only planning to read one of the Tales books?
Good call Lora! Tales from the New Republic would be a good addition to the list; it includes a Mara Jade short story by Zahn and a four part novella co-written by Zahn and Stackpole!
While I believe I’ve read all of the Tales books at some point over the years, I’m only rereading one of them because, well, I only own one of them. This list/project originally began as me wanting to read through all the ones I own and sorta expanded to include some others. It’s also a matter of what books I can easily get through my local library. (They already hate me for all the interlibrary loan requests I’ve already placed.
If you want to read the Tales books and can’t get them through the library, you can get them used on amazon for less than $4.
Oh god, you crazy person. If you manage this in less than a year I shall buy you many drinks
I’ll be done in less than 6 months. Get those drinks ready! 😛
I had no idea there were so many…!

I’ve been fiddling with the idea of reading through the SWEU as well, but in publication order rather than timeline order. Perhaps I shall make it a New Year’s project!
Have fun on your reading journey!
