Review: Most Wanted

If you’re like me, you walked out of Solo: A Star Wars Story wanting to know everything you possibly could about Qi’ra and read dozens of stories about her. Thankfully, Most Wanted by Rae Carson came out the same day as the film and I was eager to dive into it especially since I’m a far of Carson’s Fire and Thorns trilogy. Even better? Most Wanted definitely did not disappoint.

Most Wanted introduces us to both Han and Qi’ra not more than a year before Solo begins with Lady Proxima pitting the two of them against each other to determine who will be the next Head Child of the White Worms. Given that the promotion comes with extra rations (including real food!) and other “privileges,” both of them really want it. Badly. When a deal goes very wrong, Han and Qi’ra realize that the only chance they have of salvaging either of their hopes of becoming Head is to work together and find themselves on a crazy adventure that neither of them could have ever forseen. Holonet Blast #62

After last week’s fairly light week, this week brings us quite a bit to talk about! Let’s jump right in, starting with the copious amounts of video game news.

Battlefront II is getting more content, starting with a continuation of Han Solo Season, bringing you more Solo content this Tuesday, June 12. This includes new locations (KESSEL!),  new appearances, and more. In July, Battlefront II will also see the addition of a new Starfighter Mode, which will focus on piloting (and destroying) Hero ships, and EA promises another, larger-scale mode later this year. Finally (as far as this week’s Battlefront news, that is), new Clone Wars content is coming to your consoles this fall, including Heroes Anakin, Obi-Wan, Dooku, and Grievous and also Geonosis. I would make a Clone Wars pun here if I could think of anything other than droids saying “roger, roger.”

One more piece of videogame news: EA has announced an action RPG coming from Respawn Entertainment during the 2019 holidays. A single-player RPG! I’m excited! Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be set after Revenge of the Sith and will follow a Padawan that survived the purge. No word yet on whether the Padawan will be customizable.

In less video game-related news that is still kind of video game-related, the virtual reality company The Void is opening nine new locations across the US. You might know them as the folks behind Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, but I sure don’t because I haven’t been to a Disney Park since last Celebration. No word yet on when the new experience centers will be opening or what experiences will be involved.

In Star Wars Celebration news, while some Celebration Chicago tickets are still available, both the 5-day tickets and the Saturday tickets are sold out. If you are hoping to attend, it is highly recommended you not delay your ticket purchases.

One last, not-Star Wars thing before I leave you to enjoy your week: ANIMATED MILES MORALES SPIDER-MAN MOVIE IN THEATERS THIS DECEMBER:

SPIDER-GWEN AND PETER PARKER ARE IN IT, TOO, BECAUSE IT’S INTO THE SPIDERVERSE

*ahem*

See you next time!

Review: The Mighty Chewbacca and the Forest of Fear

What’s a wookiee to do when the daughter of the Emperor’s advisor has taken his partner hostage and will only free him if said wookiee goes on a dangerous assignment for her? Complete the mission, of course! The Mighty Chewbacca and the Forest of Fear by Tom Angleberger is a middle grade book that teams up everyone’s favorite wookiee with a young woman who’s trying to help her people and the galaxy’s snarkiest KX security droid.

Angleberger has a delightfully wry yet fun style of writing, providing direct commentary on the story as the narrator. Writing Chewbacca can be a challenge since his words are traditionally not translated directly but given vague meaning. Angleberger finds a way to make it fun and feel logical. The narration is really what makes the book veer more towards special and away from “this is fine” and I actually found myself laughing out loud once or twice.

Star Wars, as of late, has seemed to have fun pairing Chewie up on his solo missions with a spunky and relatively young girl to be a foil. That girl also usually has her own agenda that just happens to somewhat line up with Chewie’s own mission but they end up doing good and becoming friends at the end. It could have very easily been tedious this time around but Angleberger found a way to keep it interesting. When in doubt, toss in the K-2SO wrench apparently. (I love that droid so much, I really do.)

The Mighty Chewbacca and the Forest of Fear is a book that kids in the middle grade age range will likely find delightful but may be less appreciated by the older ones/teenagers. It’s a fun little adventure with Chewie that could be an amusing divertissement for adults or a great journey for kids.

Thank you to Disney Lucasfilm Press for providing a copy of the book for review purposes.

Holonet Blast #61

If you’re Star Wars, what do you do the week after you release your new movie?

Turns out, not much.

It was a quiet week in the galaxy far, far away, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no news. We did get a new look at the many books related to Solo: A Star Wars Story – including a few previously-unannounced titles. Sure, you already knew about Last ShotMost Wanted, and of course The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear! But this week we (finally) got an official announcement about the Solo novelization, which will be written by Mur Lafferty and be released on September 4. Lafferty is no stranger to Star Wars, having previously written the short stories “The Voice of the Empire” Star Wars Insider and “Not for Nothing” in From a Certain Point of View. Other newly-announced titles include Star Wars: Scum and Villainy – Case Files on the Galaxy’s Most Notorious by Pablo Hidalgo and Solo: Tales from Vandor by Jason Fry.

The Star Wars Celebration website also went live. Be sure to check it out for all ticket and hotel related information and more.

Finally, it may not be Solo-related, but another book was announced this week when StarWars.com revealed Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy. This exciting new title will gather 75 profiles on the female characters from the Star Wars films, cartoons, novels, comics, and more. Written by Amy Ratcliffe, the book will also include artwork from 18 female and non-binary artists, showcasing the kind of diversity and representation that we hope to see more of on the creative side.

That’s all for this week, friends – may the Force be with you.

This podcast is NOT spoiler-free and covers chapter 29 through the end of the book. We also mention plot points from Star Wars: The Clone WarsStar Wars: Rebels, and AHSOKA by E.K. Johnston (which we discussed in our episodes 24-26).

Holonet Blast #60

Solo, what a man! Last week saw the release of a BRAND NEW STAR WARS MOVIE! That never gets old, does it? Solo: A Star Wars Story opened Thursday night in the United States, and is tracking to make $101 million over the long Memorial Day weekend. Sadly, this is under projections, but word of mouth has been pretty solid, so hopefully it will experience less of a drop than The Last Jedi or Rogue One in its second weekend. (Regular reminder that The Force Awakens was a huge anomaly that will most likely not be repeated any time soon in Star Wars.)

In related news, don’t forget to check out Most WantedThe Art of SoloSolo: A Visual Guide, and the Solo soundtrack, all released on May 25. A new Forces of Destiny short was also released on Friday featuring Solo‘s Qi’ra. She was not voiced by Emilia Clarke, but rather Olivia Hack. A Beckett comic one-shot is also incoming.

Feel like watching a different Star Wars movie from your various streaming devices? You’re in luck! The Last Jedi will drop on Netflix on June 26.

Finally, we got a bunch of Galaxy’s Edge news over the past week, thanks in part to the Galactic Nights event held at Hollywood Studios. The Disney Parks blog announced that Galaxy’s Edge will open in Disneyland in Summer 2019 and in Walt Disney World in late Fall 2019. Start planning your vacations now! Or, probably, wait for firmer dates so you’re not disappointed. WDW News Today reported that a patent reveals the development of a virtual narrative system coming to Galaxy’s Edge. This tracks with previous reports and rumors regarding a reputation system that will be used in the land. The Galaxy’s Edge panel at Galactic Nights revealed that the name of the village guests will visit on Batuu is called “Black Spire Village.” (Keep an ear out for this name in Solo!) Black Spire Outpost will also feature LOTHCATS and awesome rides, while ligthsabers might coming to the Star Wars hotel. We simply cannot wait for all the Star Wars fun to come at Disney parks.

That’s it for the Holonet Blast this week. Now go catch another viewing of Solo!
