Resistance Review: A Quick Salvage Run

Will someone please just treat Tam Ryvora with the love and respect that she deserves and not lie to and manipulate her? Please? Someone? Anyone?

This week’s episode of Star Wars Resistance, “A Quick Salvage Run”, picks up quite soon after the previous one. The Colossus is rapidly running out of supplies including coaxium. They have just enough to make the hyperspace jump to D’Qar where there was a Resistance base. Problem is… the events of The Last Jedi have already begun and there’s nothing left but the remnants of a space battle. Without enough coaxium to make another jump, they’ve got no choice except to hope they can salvage some from the remnants of the First Order’s dreadnought and also hope the First Order doesn’t find them first.

This episode had significantly less Torra Doza than the previous one which is unfortunate but it was still a pretty solid episode over all. The Colossus is still trying to figure out what the heck to do next because they definitely weren’t prepared for an extended flight into space. I appreciate that the show isn’t just hand-waving these things and brings them up almost immediately. It’s clear that tensions are starting to run high amongst the citizens of the station and while the pirates agreed to help (for a price), I can’t help but think it’s just a matter of time before a mutiny of sorts might spring up.

Speaking of trouble, we saw hints of it in the trailer but Papa Xiono finally made an appearance via hologram! I’m relieved on Kaz’s behalf that his family was apparently off world but their survival throws another wrench into the mix since apparently the First Order seems to be targeting the Xionos since their son is a spy. This raises a question about how normal this is for other known members of the Resistance. Obviously it’s a different situation than being a part of the Rebel Alliance since the Empire was the acknowledged government and it would make sense that families of prominent members would have become targets for retribution. In this case, the New Republic is/was the legitimate government with the First Order being more of a powerful fringe organization. Do they really have the strength and reach to go after the family of someone relatively low level in the Resistance like Kaz? Especially with Starkiller Base gone? Or is he just an easy target given his family’s prominence within the Senate? It’s an interesting question to consider that I hope the show delves further into later on.

Over on the First Order side of things, I am increasingly concerned about Tam. When she joined the First Order at the end of last season, it was a logical decision based upon her limited set of information and how her friends had lied to her for months. Agent Tierny treated her with respect and didn’t lie to her. It just made sense Tam went with her. It’s fascinating watching Tierny continue to manipulate her into being an asset for the First Order and not just a TIE fighter pilot. While everyone else just uses her new cadet ID number, Tierny is very deliberate with her use of Tam’s name, further reinforcing the idea that Tierny actually cares about her even though she’s just another asset.

Bullet points time!

  • Synara’s back! And there was much rejoicing!
  • Neeku aboard the dreadnought irritated me more than usual this week.
  • Seeing the Aces in action was great!
  • The inclusion of a “Did you hear about the new…” conversation was a great nod.
  • Of course Jace Rucklin joined the First Order. Of course.
  • The bit at the end where they’re transferring the coaxium may be one of the tensest moments in the show yet!

Although we’re just at episode 2, season 2 of Star Wars Resistance seems to be off to a really strong start. It’ll be fascinating to see how they continue to balance their large cast especially now with the First Order even more in play.
