Resistance Review: The New World and No Place Safe

Star Wars Resistance has a lot of ground to cover with a just few episodes left and honestly, I’m a little nervous about how they’re going to do it. But before we get there, we’ve got to talk about this week’s episodes. Yes, there were two of them.

The Colossus finds what they hope is an out of the way planet to stay on for the foreseeable future and Captain Doza sends the Aces out on a scouting run. When Kaz and Griff encounter the locals, it doesn’t initially go well since the locals mistakenly think they’re associated with the First Order. It’s soon cleared up and an alliance is established… until the First Order appears and the Colossus has no choice but to flee again.

First things first, these two episodes were a slightly weird choice to pair together as a double header. The events of the first certainly influence the second but they’re not nearly connected as the ones where we met Resistance operative Norath Kev a few weeks ago. If anything, showing these two episodes together made me wish they’d been one hour long episode with more time spent on Tam and the First Order attack. (But then again, when do we at Tosche Station not want more Tam?)

Speaking of Tam, her loyalty to the First Order and feelings about her former friends continue to be at war with one another in a way that has to come to a head soon. Hopefully. She gets a targeting lock on Kaz… but doesn’t take it. Moments later though, her quick thinking stops Kaz’s fired missiles from taking out the star destroyer’s bridge which later earns her a promotion. With just two episodes left, it’ll be interesting to see how the show takes her from wavering to abandoning the First Order for good. (This, of course, assumes that all of our speculation is correct and I really hope it is.)

Where loyalties are concerned, it’d be impossible to not talk about Kaz because not only is he the show’s the main character but his affiliation with the Resistance comes into play here. At the start of “No Place Safe,” he makes the decision to meet up with Norath and join the Resistance a little more officially. It somehow seemed inevitable and very sudden all at the same time? Maybe it had to do something with how hasty and somewhat over the top the goodbyes were? At the same time, I must admit that I found Torra’s punching Kaz in the shoulder and Yeager telling Kaz he was proud of him to be note perfect. The big question still lingering for me though is if Kaz really is going to go back to the Resistance all by himself when the time actually comes. Does no one else want to be a part of this fight after the last however many months?

Assorted Thoughts:

  • I had some feelings when Kaz said “He gave you a choice” regarding Griff’s decision to defect with Captain Doza.
  • Have we seen Yeager’s ship before? If so…. I totally forgot about it.
  • I’m very glad that’s not how Agent Tierny died.
  • Kaz and Torra’s friendship really is one of the highlights of the show.

While I wouldn’t say that either episode was a real standout, the second one in particular had an excellent space battle and some good character moments for both Kaz and Tam. They’re also a good reminder that I really will miss this show once it’s gone.
