Sidious’s plan to lure Mother Talzin into the open continues right along with Maul’s anger and desire for victory.  Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #2 by Jeremy Barlow and Juan Frigeri hits comic store shelves today.

There’s no reprieve from battle as Maul’s forces retreat to Ord Mantell.  Mother Talzin sends him a ship full of fierce Nightbrother warriors as reinforcements but will they be enough to withstand the attacks led by Count Dooku and General Grievous?

Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir continues to live up to the promise of its first issue with a solidly enjoyable follow up.  Again, one of the things that I really appreciate about this limited series is how it this is a story that’s playing out on two levels.  On the surface, we’ve got Maul continuing to lead his army against Dooku’s Separatist forces.  On a higher level, we have two master players pulling all the strings.  Personally, I find the metaphorical chess match between Sidious and Mother Talzin to be the truly intriguing part of the comic.  That said, I think those who are looking for their Darth Maul fix definitely won’t be disappointed.   Anyone looking for some more Count Dooku will also appreciate this book.  In fact, it’s probably worth the price of the issue for that cover alone if you’re a Dooku fan.

Juan Frigeri’s art has grown on me and I am liking it more than I was the previous issue.  I never necessarily disliked it but there’s something about the way he drew Mother Talzin in this issue that really caught my attention.  I do stand by my comment of this artwork feeling rather standard for a Star Wars comic and that’s still not a bad thing.

While this comic is certainly doing an admirable job of telling a great story, I do feel like it’s a shame we never got to see this story in animated form like it was intended because these battle scenes would have been glorious to behold.  All of this, however, should not and does not detract from the storytelling in this medium.

Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #2 gets a 4/5 this week along with a recommendation especially for Clone Wars and Maul fans.
