Ashley Eckstein Upbeat About Disney Purchase

Given Clone Wars voice actress Ashley Eckstein’s love of Disney, it should come as no surprise that she’s very excited about the big Lucasfilm purchase and what this means for the future of both companies. Over at the official Star Wars Blog, Ashley talks about her history with Disney.

One could say that I “grew up Disney.” My Dad started working for Disney when I was two years old and my earliest childhood memories revolve around Disney. Growing up in Orlando, Florida, with a parent that was a Disney “cast member” definitely had its perks. I got to go to the Disney parks all the time for free, I got in to advance screenings for Disney movies, my summer camps were at the Disney resorts, and I had special opportunities like going to live tapings of The Mickey Mouse Club. I bring this up because Disney was and always has been a MAJOR influence in my life and has definitely shaped the person I am today.

Ashley Eckstein’s Celebration VI Video Diaries

Missing Celebration VI a bit? Ashley Eckstein’s got your back. just released is her complete video diaries from CVI. All-around awesome people Bryan Young and Amy Ratcliffe are featured. At the 27-minute mark you can see Ashley and artist Cat Staggs talk about the CVI-exclusive Mara Jade shirt.

Her Universe Debuts Celebration Exclusives

We got a teaser a few weeks ago, but today Her Universe finally revealed its Mara Jade shirt, designed by artist Cat Staggs. The bad news? Only 300 shirts will be available at Star Wars Celebration, and only 50 will be available online. The other bad news? Of course, Mara is wearing her trademark catsuit.

Still, it’s a gorgeous shirt (love the v-neck design!) and I’ll definitely be trying to get my hands on it. Hopefully it will sell out and Her Universe will produce even more Expanded Universe items; perhaps even Mara in Jedi attire, or Mara and Luke?

Also exclusive to Celebration include an R2-D2 charm. In wider availablity, Her Universe will debut two awesome tanks featuring the Rebel Alliance insignia and Imperial emblem. I will definitely be purchasing the Rebel option.

Read all about Her Universe at Celebration VI here.

Edit: Ashley tweeted me some information about why it’s an exclusive design:

We do not have the rights for the SWEU and we had to get special rights just to do this shirt. We are only allowed to make this an exclusive for Celebration. We are also releasing 50 online. I will work on getting the rights for the SWEU but that’s why this has to be exclusive.

Thanks for the update, Ashley! I hope the Powers That Be will see how much interest there is for Expanded Universe shirts and allow Her Universe to produce even more.

Her Universe Boldly Goes Into A New Franchise

One of the new Trek-themed shirts

One major announcement just wasn’t enough for Her Universe. Earlier this week, it was announced they would be venturing into BBC land and producing all-new Doctor Who shirts. Yesterday, Ashley Eckstein announced that they had also secured a license to create Star Trek wardrobe.

For the first time in Star Trek’s 46-year history, one company is focusing exclusively on the female fans of the legendary space adventure. Her Universe™, a leader in female genre merchandise, announced its new license with CBS Consumer Products to create a collection of apparel and accessories for the growing female Star Trek fan base.

With a limited debut July 11th at San Diego’s Comic Con and online at Heruniverse.com, the Star Trek by Her Universe line will feature fashion tops and hoodies rolled out over the course of the year highlighting images, characters and phrases from the Star Trek franchise. To recognize the female fans of Star Trek, CBS Consumer Products has created a unique Star Trek logo which will only appear on merchandise from the Her Universe collection.

It’s great to see Her Universe expanding into more and more fandoms. The-Other-Star-Franchise was a natural choice and one that I imagine our own Emily is quite excited about. Be sure to head to the Her Universe shop to check out the new offerings, including something special for you Wil Wheaton fans out there.

Sports and Geek Fandom: The Bizarre Double Standard

Here at Tosche Station, we mean it when we say we’ll talk about anything and everything that has to do with geek culture.

I’m a sports fan. Gridiron football, soccer, basketball (though we’re not on speaking terms until the Sonics come back to Seattle). My first love, though, was baseball. I grew up watching the Seattle Mariners and listening to Dave Niehaus* weave together a daily narrative of America’s grand pass time. Even as my enjoyment of gridiron and basketball waned and my passion for soccer rose, baseball always stayed at the top of my list. But why? Why a game that’s admittedly slow-paced, is crammed full of breaks in the action, whose popularity always seems to be waning? A simple answer, really. Baseball lends itself beautifully to geek culture.

*And to give this a bit more of a science fiction feel, one of the greatest Niehaus calls ever occurred when outfielder Ichiro Suzuki threw a ball on a line from right field to third to gun down Terrance Long. In his words, “Ichiro threw something out of Star Wars.”
