Carol Danvers Is Getting A Promotion

As you may have heard on the latest podcast, we’re happy to endorse a new comic this July: the all-new Captain Marvel.

This July, Carol Danvers, once known as Ms. Marvel, will take on the legacy of a legendary hero in CAPTAIN MARVEL, a new ongoing series by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy.

“My pitch was called ‘Pilot’ and the take can pretty much be summed up with ‘Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeager,’” says DeConnick. “Carol’s the virtual definition of a Type A personality. She’s a competitor and a control freak. At the start of our series, we see Carol pre-Captain Marvel, pre-NASA even, back when she was a fiercely competitive pilot. We’ll see her meeting one of her aviation heroes and we’ll see her youthful bravado, her swagger. Then over the course of the first arc we’re going to watch her find her way back to that hungry place. She’ll have to figure out how to be both Captain Marvel and Chuck Yeager—to marry the responsibility of that legacy with the sheer joy being nearly invulnerable and flying really [expletive] fast.  Sporting a revamped costume to compliment the codename, Danvers not only faces unfamiliar dangers and challenges, but also delves into her own history as well as that of the late Kree soldier Mar-Vell, the first person to operate as Captain Marvel.”

I know I’m excited for this. I’m still a relative newcomer to the world of comics, but one character that has quickly become a favorite of mine is Carol Danvers. Great backstory, compelling, lots of depth. Just the kind of female character that fandom needs. And now she’s getting one heck of a (very deserved) promotion to Captain Marvel.

If you’re looking to support a great female character written by a great female author, pick up the new Captain Marvel this July.

Marvel Cosmic Primer

It’s been a pretty slow news week on the SW front so I’ve decided to go ahead and throw this up on the jumbotron for you all to take a look at.  Star Wars is a big part of my fandom but it will always be second to my first love of geekdom, comic books.

Marvel Comics has never really been my thing.  I will freely admit that I am and have always been the quintessential DC fanboy, so most of my knowledge of Marvel probably isn’t any more than the average comic book fan.

There is one caveat to that, though, and it’s one that I’ve only discovered in the past couple of years.  At the same time that Marvel was rolling out what many people consider a landmark in comic events, Civil War, they were also running a different sprawling event, Annihilation.

Annihilation was a story line that was concerned with the cosmic level setting and characters that generally don’t get much more than cameos in the regular comics.  Characters like the Silver Surfer or Captain Marvel generally show up occasionally and do something but they don’t tend to stick around all that much.

This event was the spotlight for these characters.  One cosmic level entity, Annihilus, is trying to take over the galaxy and he’s being opposed by the heroes of the cosmic setting, many of them that most readers either don’t know or they don’t remember.  The primary characters of the story are former Heralds of Galactus and a really pretty old character that nobody had done anything with in quite a while, Nova.

To any of you out there that don’t typically like comic books but do love a pretty good sci-fi story, I would recommend Annihilation to any of you.  I will say, however, that there are somet things that reader needs to know in order to understand the situation.

That’s what this post is for, it’s probably going to be pretty long.  The actual primer starts after the jump.

New Mystery Star Wars Project Announcement Incoming

Hit it, John Jackson Miller!

Could this be the original trilogy project Dark Horse hinted at during C2E2? We’ll have to wait for the actual announcement to know for certain, but that won’t stop any of us from stooping to rampant speculation.

I, for one, am hoping we’ll finally get a book or comic filled with Bren Derlin Facts.

New Mystery OT Era Project from a Big Dark Horse Talent

James Haley spotted some interesting Dark Horse-related news coming out of the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2).

The second arc of “Conan” by Brian Wood will be a three-issue arc by James Herring, but Becky Cloonan will continue to work on the series long term. “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi” did well for the publisher, Parkinson said. There are more plans for the original trilogy characters including the death of Boba Fett as written by Tom Taylor in “Star Wars: Blood Ties.” More plans are in store for Darth Vader and Darth Maul comes July. Atkins also announced that readers will soon see a “Star Wars” book set in the original trilogy era written by one of Dark Horse’s biggest talents.

Edit: Not a trilogy, but some sort of project set in the OT era.

Speculate, readers! Speculate!
