Deak’s Dirt starts with a new Star Wars costume exhibit coming to Seattle’s EMP museum, and Nanci and Brian will be able to attend! The release dates for Heir to the Jedi and Lords of the Sith were pushed back. We suspect the work of the dark side. There were a couple of new mini-excerpts and audio excerpts from Tarkin. This time around in Biggs’ Bull$#&@, Beardwatch is no more! JJ Abrams tells Variety that Episode VII only uses IMAX for one sequence. The rumored villain for Episode VII looks a lot like an old villain. Is John Williams scoring an Episode VII trailer in November?

Marvel Announces New Films Including Captain Marvel and Black Panther

Some dreams do come true.

Some dreams do come true.

This is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill. Marvel has finally announced solo films starring characters who are not white dudes.

Earlier today Marvel had a special media event, where they announced the titles and release dates of all of their upcoming movies through their Phase 3, including Captain Marvel and Black Panther.

Captain Marvel and Black Panther are getting movies.

tumblr_m8i8tqF8Su1qezk6n

Me, as I type this.

Black Panther, which will star Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, is slated to be in theaters November 3, 2017 and Captain Marvel (which will indeed be about Carol Danvers, something Feige blessedly confirmed) is scheduled for July 6, 2018.

Black Panther will be Marvel Studio’s first solo film starring a person of color and Captain Marvel will be their first starring someone who is not a cis man, unless they surprise and delight us with the casting for Doctor Strange.

In addition to Black Panther and Captain Marvel, Marvel also announced seven other movies, including Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which is had its release moved from July 2017 to May 2017. Here’s a handy chart of all of them and their release dates:

Captain America: Civil War May 6, 2016
Doctor Strange November 4, 2016
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 May 5, 2017
Thor: Ragnarok July 28, 2017
Black Panther November 3, 2017
Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1
May 2018
Captain Marvel July 6, 2018
Inhumans November 2, 2018
Avengers: Infinity War, Part 2
May 2019

You can read more about event and the films here at Marvel’s official site.

Edit: Guardians of the Galaxy 2 info has been added. Thank you, Bria, for pointing out that it was missing!

X-Wing and TIE Fighter get a modern digital release.

Wedge flying in the Battle of Endor

You wanted to be him.  You know you did.

It’s time to find that old joystick and hope it still works, because the old TIE Fighter and X-Wing games are finally getting re-released.  Kotaku reports that they’ll be released for $10 each on Good Old Games, possibly as soon as tomorrow, though that remains unconfirmed.

Update: The games are available right now on GOG.com! Also available are Knights of the Old Republic, Sam and Max Hit the Road, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition.

So buckle up–it’s time to get back to some of the best story lines Star Wars has ever seen.

Tosche Station Radio #96: Ratings and Timeslots

It’s the news, ratings, and Rebels on this episode of Tosche Station Radio.

Kicking off the show, the hosts highlight what’s New on the Blog. Shoshana gave us her recap of Geek Girl Con 2014. Bria reviewed Tarkin by James Luceno. This week’s installment of Nanci’s Heir to the Empire retrospective visited Bpfassh and Dagobah. Brian reviewed Fighter Flight, the latest episode of Rebels. Shoshana live tweeted the Pink Five saga. Nanci reviewed Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy by Jason Fry

Fixer’s Flash sees Nanci reading Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy, a new series by Jason Fry. Brian wrote a Rebels fanfic.

This week’s Deak’s Dirt starts with some new Tarkin excerpts on the Star Wars Books Facebook page, and Issue 153 of the Star Wars Insider will contain another excerpt, as well as some artwork. Marvel solicits Star Wars #1 with a fantastic variant cover, which is an homage to the original Marvel Star Wars #1. There’s a sneak peek of Vader’s appearance in ABC’s airing of Spark of Rebellion. And finally in the most anticlimactic rumor ever, Matthew Stover is not writing a new Star Wars book.

Biggs’ Bull$#@* hears rumors that Episode VII is wrapping up filming shortly.

Rebels is the theme for Camie’s Concerns this week. The hosts discuss the ratings issue and wonder if the timeslot and channel may have something to do with it. Later they review the episodes that have aired thus far.

ABC to air Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion

rebels logoIf you missed the original airing of Spark of Rebellion, don’t you fret. ABC will be re-airing it on Sunday, October 26th at 7PM. If you did see it already, well, you may still want to tune in. From the Official Site

The critically-acclaimed epic adventure Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion will air on ABC on Sunday, October 26 (7:00 p.m. ET/PT). Executive producer Dave Filoni states, “We wanted to do something special for the ABC broadcast. We’ve added a scene which gives audiences insight into the Inquisitor and includes a cameo by Darth Vader voiced by the distinguished actor James Earl Jones.

Emphasis added.

So who else is going to be watching the intro movie for the fourth time?

Rebels gets order for second season

rebels logoBefore even one episode of Star Wars Rebels aired, Disney has ordered a second season of the new animated series set in the Galaxy Far, Far Away. From the official site:

One day ahead of a highly-anticipated television premiere, Disney Channels Worldwide President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh announced plans to produce a second season of the animated series Star Wars Rebels from Lucasfilm.

Marsh said, “The global expectations for this series could not have been any higher. And I am proud to say that the team at Lucasfilm has delivered something that has surpassed even that incredibly high bar – artistically and thematically.”

Star Wars Rebels has received acclaim from critics and fans alike since its advance debut screening at San Diego Comic-Con in July, followed by special previews this week on WATCH Disney XD and other digital platforms. Star Wars Rebels will be introduced via a television movie, Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, premiering Friday, October 3 (9:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel in the U.S. and Monday, October 6 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD in the U.S.  It ushers in the series beginning Monday, October 13 (9:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD in the U.S.  The series will air in 34 languages across 163 countries in over 400 million households.

“We all love making ‘Rebels,’ so we couldn’t be happier that it’s moving into a second season,” says Lucasfilm VP of Creative Development, Kiri Hart.  “Our fantastic creative team is dreaming up new stories for the crew of the Ghost that will expand their experience of the galaxy and deepen their heroes’ journeys. The fan response to the show has been amazing, humbling and inspiring. We’re looking forward to the adventure ahead.”

Curiously though, the press release also includes this:

The creative team behind the second season of Star Wars Rebels includes Executive Producers Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni, and Co-Executive Producer and Supervising Writer Henry Gilroy.

Absent from that list is Greg Weisman. It’s currently not clear if he’s no longer involved with the show. If that’s the case, it would be disappointing for numerous fans who enjoyed his other projects.

Still, it is good to see Disney putting their faith into Rebels. Not all shows are fortunate enough to be renewed, especially this early on. Those who have seen the premiere film early online (including us) have been generally positive. I’m glad that the showrunners have the security of two seasons to craft what they want to do and make the case for even more.

John Jackson Miller wins Scribe Award for Kenobi

KenobiCoverStar Wars Books announced on their Facebook page today that John Jackson Miller won a Scribe Award this weekend for Kenobi.  The Scribe Awards are hosted by the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers.  Novels for franchises like Star Wars often are often no longer considered serious contenders for Hugo or Nebula awards, no matter how excellent they may be.

Tosche Station has plenty of coverage of Kenobi, including a podcast with John Jackson Miller as our special guest, so be sure to check out all of our posts with the Kenobi tag.
