Star Wars, Geek Culture, and Power Converters
Remember about two weeks ago when the biggest thing on the horizon wasn’t Episode VII? That’s right, we were excited about the Star Wars edition of Angry Birds. Today, the re-skinned and re-themed game is now available for purchase on most major mobile platforms and desktop environments.
Most of you, I’m sure, are like me right now and hoping and praying that the election results hurry up and get in so we can all get back to normal lives. For me, normal on Tuesdays involves episodes of NCIS, but since we’re missing my favorite procedural for election coverage tonight, I thought reviewing last week’s episode, which guest-starred Star Wars favorite, Billy Dee Williams, might make up for the lack of show.

Remember that big-name guest said to be appearing on The Clone Wars this season? None other than The Doctor himself, David Tennant. IGN has the scoop, saying that Tennant will be playing an ancient droid responsible for helping younglings construct their lightsabers.

I meant to post this a few days ago, but with the whole Episode VII-becoming-reality-thing, it got lost in the drafts. In any case, artist Alex Ross has released the cover for issue two of the new Star Wars comic:

Since reality has turned itself upside down and the impossible is happening left and right*, here’s another report that fits that bill. According to Entertainment Weekly, a “highly placed source” has said that Harrison Ford is open to the idea of donning the vest and bloodstripes again.
Harrison Ford is open to the idea of bringing Han Solo back to life on the silver screen in 2015, according to sources close to the just-announced Star Wars sequel, but don’t be surprised if his contract includes a mandatory death scene for the sly old space smuggler.
“Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it, all three of them are,” said one highly placed source, referring to Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, the trio that made a hyper-speed jump to global fame on May 25, 1977, the opening night for George Lucas’s original Star Wars film.
Usual caveats here. A “highly placed source” could just be a janitor over in Marin County. But hey, there was a point in time where it seemed absurd that Ford would take up the mantle of Indiana Jones again.
*Seriously, Episode VII. That’s a thing.
If you don’t read Scott Kurtz’s PVP, well, you should. If you’re like me and you don’t necessarily read it regularly so you can catch up all at once as a treat to yourself–today’s comic might be an exception as Cole and Brent catch up and discuss the important things in life–The Walking Dead and Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm.
Sometimes? A Person gets a very bad idea and then the Captain of the Blog she writes for encourages her to follow through on this very bad idea. (It’s probably revenge for being a costume enabler.) In this case? Bria has decided to reread her way through the Expanded Universe and to bring you along on this crazy journey. It’ll also probably include some gifs to properly express the craziness.
First let me clarify that I am in no way reading ALL of the EU. My hat is off to Pablo Hidalgo for managing that feat and I do not wish to try and replicate it. Plus, I wouldn’t be able to include beautifully done Expanded Universe artwork with my reviews. I’m also not even going to read my way through all of the books on the official list that lives in front of all the EU books because I simply do not have all of those books available to me.
Here’s how this is going to work. I’ll be starting chronologically and reading my way through my own personal Star Wars book collection. I will also be rereading and reading some books for the first time that I am able to get from the library and/or also interest me. I’m going to make every effort to try and get my hands on and either read or reread as many of the books that I don’t own as I can. There are some very notable exceptions that I just will not reread (coughBlackFleetcough) however feel free to try and bribe me into reading them. (Brian’s already agreed to reread Revenge of the Sith and get all of the emotional trauma that goes with it in exchange for me rereading The Crystal Star.)
I’ll be posting my thoughts on the books every now and then and keep you all updated on my progress! I’ll be reviewing either series or multiple books at a time so I’m not flooding the blog with a post every day. Check out the coded book list below to see what books I’ll (hopefully) soon be reading! Of all the various Episode VII and Star Wars rumors that emerged over the weekend (and you can head over to Club Jade for excellent coverage on that front), only one seemed to have legs and looked plausible. According to the LA Times, several screenwriters have been in contact with George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy in order to pitch their own ideas for the new live-action films.
In the months before Disney announced it would acquire “Star Wars” studio Lucasfilm, several different screenwriters paid visits to Lucasfilm’s Northern California compound to pitch George Lucas and his co-chair Kathleen Kennedy their ideas for the new live-action installment, the series’ seventh, according to a person familiar with the talks who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about them.
Now you might be wondering, why is Lucasfilm doing this? Didn’t Lucas give Disney his story treatments as part of the sale agreement? It could be that the treatments aren’t concrete rules for what the films will be and that whoever is brought in as director and screenwriter will have some say over where the new trilogy goes. Or it could be as simple as these meetings being an audition of sorts. They’re not going to divulge the content of the treatments, so right now they just want to see if there’s a screenwriter that will mesh with what Lucasfilm has in mind.
Or maybe they’re turning the bulk of the writing over to the screenwriter.
It’s too soon to tell exactly what the motivations are, but of all the rumors lately, these meetings are definitely in the plausible-to-likely category.
