Resistance Review: The Breakout

As we end 2019, I’m happy to say that we’re wrapping up the year the same way we started it. That’s right folks: at least for now, Star Wars Resistance is good again.

This week’s episode picked up right where last week’s “The Missing Agent” left off, showing us what happened to Yeager, Synara, and a thankfully, apparently repaired CB-23 in the wake of their fight with bounty hunter Ax Tagrin. Left without no one to rescue them except Kaz and Norath Kev (voiced by the always delightful Daveed Diggs), one might be forgiven for assuming the First Order had them in their clutches. But fear not, fellow fans – competent Kaz is back in action.

The Mandalorian Season 1 – Tosche Station Discusses

There has been a heck of a lot of Star Wars over the last few months and honestly, you couldn’t be blamed if you’ve had a hard time keeping up with it all. But now that we’re past The Rise of Skywalker and The Mandalorian has concluded its first season, we thought it might be nice to look back at the latter… in round table format!  Continue reading

Resistance Review: The Missing Agent

The Skywalker Saga might be over but that doesn’t mean that Star Wars is! Who would have thought only a few years ago that we’d be watching both a new Star Wars movie and have episodes from two Star Wars television shows on either side?

This week’s episode of Star Wars Resistance moves the plot forward a bit with an episode that actually delightfully ends on a cliffhanger! The Colossus picks up a distress call from someone named Norath Kev on a Resistance frequency. Kaz, CB, Yeager, and Synara go to check it out only to find that Norath has been captured by the bounty hunter Ax Tagrin… and that it’s definitely a trap! Continue reading

Holonet Blast #133

We really don’t have much for you this week because the itty bitty little space movie came out last week and… yeah. That’s basically it.

Related to that space movie, apparently the same sex kiss in Episode IX was cut from the movie when it was shown in the Middle East. Interestingly enough, it was kept in for screenings in China. It wasn’t exactly representation to write home about though.

In much happier news, Looking for Leia, a documentary series about female and non-binary Star Wars fans was acquired by SYFY Wire. All seven episodes are now available to watch online. It’s a project that many of us around here are fond of so me sure to go check it out!

And that’s it! Actually, that’s it for us/this particular column for the year. We’ll be taking the next week off to nap and to spend some time with family and friends for the holidays. Thank you to everyone who’s either read our posts or listened to one of the network’s podcasts over the year. We’ll see you all in 2020!

Resistance Review: Station to Station

It’s funny how much better this show gets when we get an episode with Tam. Sure, “Station to Station” doesn’t quite hit the same highs as “Rendezvous Point” but it’s definitely one I enjoyed more than the previous two episodes combined and yes, that’s because Tam was there.

Tosche Station: We have a Tam Ryvora Agenda

The Colossus is in trouble and needs a crucial part fast or else everyone aboard is going to die horribly. Their solution? Send Kaz and Neeku to sneak aboard a similar refueling station to steal one. The problem? 1) It’s under First Order control. 2) Tam and Rucklin have been sent there on a supply run too. 3) Also General Hux is there? Continue reading

Holonet Blast #132

It’s been a slow week for Star Wars. The calm before the storm. The deep breath before the plunge. The moment of emo silence before Kylo Ren emo screams.

But in fact, while we were all on high alert for the latest clips of new footage from The Rise of Skywalker, there were a couple of bits of information this week about the comics. Speaking of emo screams, StarWars.com gave us our first look at Charles Soule’s upcoming The Rise of Kylo Ren #1, featuring a very destroyed Jedi temple and a very grumpy Ben Solo. You can look forward to reading the whole issue this week when it hits stores on Wednesday, the day before Episode IX changes all our lives.

And, for those of you who were terrified you’d seen the last of Beilert Valance with the end of the Target Vader comic miniseries, fear not (I’m sure there were one or two of you who were worried)! Marvel announced the launch of a fourth ongoing Star Wars comic series, Bounty Hunters, to be written by Ethan Sacks and illustrated by Paolo Villanelli. The series will launch in March 2020 and presumably feature bounty hunters, though that’s just a shot in the dark.

Three more days, people. See you on the other side of the Star War.

Hope

Dear Owen,

Welcome to the world, buddy.

At some point a few years down the line, you’re probably going to read this blog post. By then you’ll probably have gotten tired of listening to mom and dad talk into microphones in the office. You’ll probably be wondering why we keep podcasting week after week, month after month, year after year. The truth is, this silly little podcast is a big reason you’re here today.

Your mom and I began recording together almost eight years ago to the day I sat down to write this. At that point, we were friends living on opposite sides of the country. Sometimes, though, friendship can become more when you get to know someone more and spend more time with them. We wound up finding love where neither of us expected it in this silly little podcast. Hopefully you can indulge us, even when we sound like absolute dorks.

By the time you can read this, you’ll no doubt be aware that Star Wars is something that’s important to your parents and you’ve learned that because of those silly podcasts we record. Maybe it’s something you love too! But hey, you’re your own person with your own interests and joys. I hope that you can find something that brings you as much fun and meaning that Star Wars has for us. And yeah, we’ve definitely found some meaning in Star Wars over the years.

I’m generally someone that tries not to turn blockbuster media into some sort of religious experience, but there are some lessons in these silly space wizard films that are important and some I think will help you down the line. In Star Wars, there’s a recurring theme that runs throughout all the movies, television shows, books, and comics: hope.

Book Wars Pod, Episode 109: Five Grysks in a Trenchcoat

Download

This week we’re continuing our read of Timothy Zahn’s THRAWN: TREASON, talking about the Grysks and the threat they post to the Empire (and why no one seems to care, besides Thrawn). We also dig deeper into loyalty and treason in a divided Empire, and how stupid Ronan’s cape looks.

Book Wars Pod explores the Star Wars universe through the franchise’s non-screen media: the canon novels, comics, and video games. On The Continued Importance of Doctor Aphra

Three years ago, I sat down to write a piece titled “On the Importance of Dr. Aphra.” At the time, we were just barely two months past Aphra surviving the end of Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca’s Darth Vader series. That in itself had been enough of a surprise but then, when Marvel gave Aphra her own ongoing series? I was genuinely shocked and in the best way possible. Not only was she the first female character to get a Star Wars ongoing title but she was also one of the first characters unaffiliated with the films or TV shows to headline her own comic or book. And now that comic book has come to an end with the publication of yesterday’s Doctor Aphra #40, a more than respectable run especially in this modern comic book world.

I didn’t think the book would make it past issue #12. I’ve never been happier to be wrong. Continue reading
