On this episode of Tosche Station Radio, the hosts are joined by Matthew of Majestic Giraffe and the Wrong Opinions About Movies podcast to discuss Star Wars, movies, and creative endeavors!

In a bit of housekeeping, we’re proud to announce that we’re featuring Her Universe as an advertiser on both the blog and podcast! Her Universe: Flaunt your world.

Kicking the show off, Nanci highlights Bria’s trip to Katsucon on the blog.

In Fixer’s Flash, the hosts highlight what geeky pursuits they’ve been up to. Nanci’s been busy writing her new book concept and is already a few chapters in. Meanwhile, both Brian and Nanci waded into Once Upon a Time again and were very thankful the latest episode was significantly better than the one that preceded it.

In Deak’s Dirt, the word is out that John Williams wants to score the Sequels! Over on the television side of things, Joss Whedon talks SHIELD. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy is no longer producing JP4 to focusing on Star Wars instead. In rumor roundups, Latino Review says that Harrison Ford is in for Episode VII, But Mark Hamill says nothing is confirmed and nothing has been signed.

This week on Camie’s Concerns, the hosts are joined by Matthew Bowers, founder of Majestic Giraffe and one of the hosts of the Wrong Opinion About Movies podcast to discuss a grab bag of geek culture including Star Wars, movies, and literature.

Wrapping up the show, the hosts field questions in our regular Ask Us Anything segment.

On this episode of Tosche Station Radio, the hosts are joined by Dunc from Club Jade to discuss Marvel’s new chick-lit initiative (this initiative featuring significantly less Nick Fury) and genre fiction in the Star Wars Expanded Universe!

Before diving into anything else, the hosts discuss a big change to the podcast. Tosche Station Radio is leaving the Solo Sound Network to join Majestic Giraffe productions. Don’t worry, very little will be changing! We’d like to thank Austin and the Solo Sound crew for being such a gracious home for the first year of the podcast and putting us in a position to succeed.

To kick off the festivities, Nanci highlights what’s new on the blog. Bria encountered Wraith Squadron and the Han and Leia love boat. Guess which one produced more feels, as the kids say. Brian reviewed Star Wars #2 by Brian Woods. Did he think it was an improvement?

In Fixer’s Flash, Nanci finished up John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War and started working on a pair of her own short stories. She’s also been busy outlining her next novel! Brian, on the other hand, read through a pair of comics, Star Wars #2 by Brian Woods and Avengers Assemble #12 by Kelly Sue DeConnick. He enjoyed one significantly more than the other.

This week’s Deak’s Dirt starts with news that Hasbro’s Mara Jade action figure is shifting to the black series. She’s also still wearing the catsuit. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg discussed Episode VII and the standalone films. In literature, Harry Potter will be getting new paperback covers for the 15th anniversary. Finally, Hollywood.com gathered up a collection of Expanded Universe authors talk about the Sequel Trilogy.

For Camie’s Concerns this week, the hosts are joined by Dunc from Club Jade to discuss Marvel’s new and somewhat odd chick-lit initiative. Wise marketing, or condescending towards their female demographic? Riffing off that, the roundtable discusses genre fiction in the Expanded Universe. Would a romance book work in this universe? What about other genres?

Wrapping up the show, the hosts field questions in our Ask Us Anything segment.

Today on Tosche Station Radio: Marvel’s Weird Chick Lit, Expanded Universe Genre Fiction

We’re going to be recording a brand-new episode of Tosche Station Radio today at 5PM Pacific time! Dunc from Club Jade will be joining us this week to discuss Marvel’s bizarre new chick lit initiative as well as genre fiction in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. You can listen live and join the chat at our Livestream channel. Do be sure to tune in, because Dunc is missing a new episode of Community and will have my head if we’re talking into the void while it’s on.

Since there is a fair chance we’ve picked up some new listeners with yesterday’s move to Majestic Giraffe Productions, you may be interested in knowing that we run a segment called Ask Us Anything where you can fire off questions at Nanci and myself and we’ll answer them. Really, anything.

So if you have questions about Marvel’s chick-lit thing, Expanded Universe genre fiction, or any geeky or fandom related topic, send them our way in the comments of this post, on our Facebook page, or hit us on Twitter.

Tosche Station Radio Joining Majestic Giraffe Productions

ToscheStationbig

I mentioned on Twitter last night that there are some big changes for the podcast coming in the next few days. I also said I’d be detailing the specifics this morning. Well, here we are, so let’s get to it.

Tosche Station Radio will be leaving the Solo Sound Network to join Majestic Giraffe Productions.

Nanci and I were recently given a new hosting opportunity that was extraordinarily generous and could allow the show to grow in new directions. Still, weighing this opportunity against the time we’ve spent with Solo Sound was extremely tough. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to be able to work with Austin and the rest of the Solo Sound staff. Without their framework and expertise, we couldn’t have made it four episodes let alone forty-four. Parting from Solo Sound to this new venture is exciting, bittersweet, and one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make since we started the podcast over a year ago. We can’t thank Solo Sound enough for putting us in a position to succeed and thrive.

What does this mean for the podcast, though? More after the jump.

On this episode of Tosche Station Radio, the hosts talk spinoffs and Star Wars!

Kicking off the show, Nanci highlights what’s new on the blog. Brian noted that one of his favorite baseball writers realized sports and geek fandom are the same thing. Meanwhile, the Waru Express visited Rogue Squadron and laid the smack down on Corran Horn.

In Fixer’s Flash, Nanci kept herself busy by reading Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. She also has been working on her current novel and planning out future writing projects. Of course, there was also the Puppy Bowl, the most important event of the last week. Brian, on the other hand, watched a whole lot of QI and is eagerly anticipating the return of Community to the airwaves.

Deak’s Dirt starts off with Ashley Eckstein revealing upcoming plans for Her Universe products. The Super Bowl happened and there were trailers for geeky films such as Iron Man, Star Trek Into Darkness, Oz the Great and Powerful, World War Z (via clubjade)Billy Dee Williams is attending Dragon*Con.Make-up artist Stuart Freeborn passed away at 98. In the big news, Bob Iger confirms standalone Star Wars films are in the works. Ain’t It Cool News reported a Yoda film while Entertainment Weekly reported Han Solo and Boba Fett films. Meanwhile author Timothy Zahn talked standalone films, along with writing Han Solo, with Hollywood.com.

This week’s Camie’s Concerns takes a look at the confirmation that Star Wars will be getting non-episodic spinoff films and perhaps other projects. Brian and Nanci discuss what they would (and wouldn’t) like to see as well as why this news is good for the fandom and doesn’t mean that Disney is ruining the franchise.

The hosts are joined by Bria and Emily this week  to discuss the latest Episode VII news and have a spoiler-filled discussion of Timothy Zahn’s Scoundrels!

Kicking off the show, Nanci highlights what’s new on the blog. Emily talked about why J.J. Abrams will be good for Star Wars. Meanwhile, Bria continued on with the Waru Express with two post-Endor books.

In Fixer’s Flash, Nanci has kept herself busy by reading through I’ve Got Your Number and starting Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. Brian FINALLY finished reading Scoundrels and found the time to read through the latest issues ofAvengers Assemble, Captain Marvel, and Hawkeye. Bria, meanwhile, has been reading all of the Mageworlds novels and working on costuming for Katsucon. Somehow she’s also found time to do work for her geek fashion blog White Hot Room. Emily has also joined the Mageworlds circle and read through the first three books. She also found the time to read Batgirl #16.

Fandom appeared to explode and this week’s Deak’s Dirt attempts to make sense of it. Her Universe released a new set of quote tees just in time for Valentine’s Day. Book of the Sith by Dan Wallace is getting the trade paperback treatment on May 4th.The surprise Star Wars novel? Darth Maul: Lockdown by Joe Schreiber. Over on the film side, the 3D treatments for the remaining Prequel Trilogy have been indefinitely postponed. The big news, however, is that Episode VII finally has a director. Lucasfilm announced late last week that Star Trek andSuper 8 director J.J. Abrams will be taking the lead for the first installment of the Sequel Trilogy. The hosts, Bria, and Emily break down their thoughts on Abrams and what this means for Star Wars.

Camie’s Concerns this week is a roundtable discussion looking at Timothy Zahn’s Scoundrels. Did the somewhat radical departure from typical Expanded Universe conventions and tropes work? Listen in to see what everyone thought of Zahn’s latest addition to the world of Star Wars literature.

Finally, the hosts wrap up the show with their Ask Us Anything segment.

Tosche Station Radio Discussing Scoundrels and J.J. Abrams Tonight, Send us your Questions!

ToscheStationbig

What are you up to tonight at 5PM Pacific? Nothing? Great! You should join us in the Livestream chat for an all-new episode of Tosche Station Radio.

Joining the usual hosting duo today are staff writers Bria and Emily as part of a Scoundrels roundtable discussion. We’ll also be discussing the Prequel Trilogy 3D postponement as wel as the J.J. Abrams news and what it could mean for Episode VII and Star Wars as a whole.

As always, we would love to take your questions! If you have questions specific to the topics we’ll be discussing, send them our way and we’ll work them into our roundtable. Any other questions relating to Star Wars or geek culture you can also submit and we’ll answer them at the end of the show.

Tosche Station Radio #41: Gender Stereotyping

Logo

This week on Tosche Station Radio, Nanci and Brian take issue with gender stereotyping in fandom and science fiction.

Kicking off the show, the hosts highlight what’s new on the blogside. Nanci explained why she likes sci-fi even though she’s a woman. She also pontificated about why she doesn’t like long books. Meanwhile, Brian reviewed the new Star Wars #1. The hosts take a few minutes to discuss the new comic before moving into …

Fixer’s Flash, where this week, Nanci’s kept busy reading Scoundrels and waiting to hear back from publishers. Both she and Brian enjoyed the return of Once Upon a Time and went down memory lane to re-watch the X-Files pilot episode.

In Deak’s Dirt, things kick off with word that there’s a new Star Wars EU book coming. Zahn talks Scoundrels on the Official Blog. There’s also a new audiobook clip, if that’s your thing.  Meanwhile, rumors are swirling that theSequel Trilogy might feature a female lead. The Oscar nominations are out. How did our favorite genre entertainment fare? (Spoilers: not very well)

This week’s Camie’s Concerns looks into an article Nanci wrote earlier this week looking at gender stereotypes (and why they suck). Nanci responds to a Damon Lindelof (Star Trek 2009) quote and the hosts delve into why assuming women aren’t into science fiction is condescending. The hosts also discuss what really can be done to draw a bigger female audience without coming off as disparaging and out-of-touch.

Finally, the hosts wrap up the show by fielding questions from listeners in our Ask Us Anything segment.

Tosche Station Radio #40: Problematic Behavior

Logo

Play in new window | Download

The hosts are back and in this week’s all-new Tosche Station Radio they investigate the problems with True Fans, fandom gatekeepers, and the Fake Geek Girl meme.

Kicking off the show, the hosts highlight what’s new on the blogside. Bria has continued on with the Waru Express, and is now through A New Hope. She reviewed Winner Lose All and Scoundrels. Stay tuned for additional reviews when your slow-reading hosts finish, as well as a roundtable. In addition, Bria also pondered if Star Wars comic publishing rights would be transitioning from Dark Horse to Marvel. Since she’s one of our resident Tolkien freaks, Bria also found time to write a review (good grief she’s been busy). Shane gave a further examination into independent comics. Maggie examined fanworks done right, focusing on the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. Brian trolled the internet. More on that later. Finally, check out our 2012 Gratuitous Linkdump!

In Fixer’s Flash, the hosts appeared to have spent the holidays being incredibly geeky. Nanci finished the Mageworlds series and read Read Winner Lose All before starting Scoundrels. She also reworked her current novel and is getting into the writing swing again. In holiday movies, she went off and saw The Hobbit and Les Mis. Meanwhile, Brian finished the Mageworlds trilogy and took some time to read new issues of Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, and Avengers Assemble. Now he’s finally started Scoundrels. He also got into a new TV series, Once Upon a Time.

Deak’s Dirt is a bit quiet this time around, understandable with the holidays having past by. Star Wars Weekends dates were announced. Brian and Nanci will be in attendance for some of them. EW had a look at 100 episodes of The Clone Wars. The new Legacy writers discussed Ania Solo. In books, Timothy Zahn’s Scoundrels finally released. According to Kathleen Kennedy, there will be an Episode VII announcement coming in January. Brian Wood discussed Pilot!Leia and the new Star Wars comic.

This week’s Camie’s Concerns dives into a pair of articles Brian wrote this week (here and here) and investigates the destructive nature of True Fans and fandom gatekeepers. Just what are true fans and gatekeepers and why is that behavior counter-productive and damaging to fandom? How does the gatekeeper tie into the fallacious Fake Geek Girl meme? Most importantly, what counts as “real” Star Wars?

Wrapping up the show, the hosts field a question in their Ask Us Anything segment.

Tosche Station Radio #39: 2012 in Review – Star Wars

Logo

Play in new window | Download
On this episode of Tosche Station Radio, the hosts are joined by Bria, Shane, and Emily to take a look back at Star Wars in 2012.

Kicking off the show, Nanci highlights what’s new on the blog. Bria continued her comic suggestions with non-Big Two titles. She also continued her EU retrospective with Republic Commando and Clone Wars titles. Nanci gave us all an etiquette lesson for when you visit a live theater performance.

In Fixer’s Flash, Nanci’s caught up on Once Upon a Time and participated in one of her favorite Christmas traditions, watching Love, Actually (and she made Brian watch as well). Both Nanci and Brian visited New York together to catch a show. Brian’s got a new issue of Avengers Assemble sitting on his iPad. Emily’s been busy playing Minecraft now that she’s free from grading papers. Shane has been reading the Taltos novels by Steven Burst and listening to the Hobbit soundtrack. Bria’s been reading Star Wars novels and writing the occasional Star Wars fan fiction.

Deak’s Dirt starts with the Star Trek Into DarknessMan of Steel, and Pacific Rim trailers. Gail Simone was fired from the Batgirl comics and we’re less than impressed with DC. Details of the new Legacy comic series dropped. In obligatory sequel trilogy news, Sam Jackson says he wants to be in on it. The Hobbit just released!

This week in Camie’s Concerns, it’s a roundtable discussion to look at just what happened in the Star Wars universe in 2012. From books, to conventions, to new films, there’s a whole lot of ground to cover, so strap in!
